today i had a huge revelation: a lot of my favorite songs this year have some sort of water theme. a couple songs from the new menomena and the artwork for HIW made me realize this. is there some sort of collective unconscious thing happening in 2010 so that everyone's thinking about water/the ocean/boats??

Possibly... I saw Rogue Wave in concert earlier this year, and one of the songs on the new Tom Petty album talks about "Watching the water..."
Being a huge Modest Mouse fan, nautical/marine references have become the norm for me, though, so its hard for me to judge.

There was a tsunami this year somewhere wasn't there? I probably sound like an idiot for not being sure but I don't normally keep up with the news and my memory's not the most accurate when it comes to dates haha

I think that there's always been a huge water theme in a lot of music in the history of Western music; I don't see anything special about this year in particular. It's probably just more likely that your favorites this year are coincidentally water-related. I think we could select any random year and start naming songs/albums/lyrics that have to do with water...it is, after all, a part of everyday life and something essential for life, while also being one of the most powerful symbolic devices in all of art.
