Okay, I'm on my 7th listen, but that's not important.
I really just wanted to ask - Did Pitchfork just totally fuck The Current over on having the exclusive premiere?

Huge hold steady fan but it sounds more like a main stream boy band to me.... I can see the reasoning to thinking it's too pop sounding, that’s what I was thinking at first, but boy band? That's one huge over exaggeration.

What do you mean by "too pop" sounding? The Hold Steady write pop songs.

Separation Sunday are you fuckin for real? Huge hold steady fan but it sounds more like a main stream boy band to me.... I question the opinions of 90% of the people posting. Here's to hoping for an actual SS sound on the rest of the album. I smell a troll.

What do you mean by "too pop" sounding? The Hold Steady write pop songs. Like, less heavy sounding. I'm terribe at describing these things.

this track is absolutely where I thought they were going to go. It sounds like Weezer. In a really, really, really good way. Rock has been begging for this song.

No, your description is a pretty common one, but I was just looking for a more specific idea of what you meant by that. I gotcha now.
The chorus honestly bugs the crap out of me. It sounds like Lifehouse or something.

Too bad lala isn't letting me purchase this song. Me either. I've never bought anything from Lala but I am wondering if purchased songs are better quality than the stream? I wouldn't be very inclined to pay for a song that wasn't CD quality. For now I've ripped the song from the stream for personal use in iTunes (basically so I can put it on repeat!) via some screen recording software. I am assuming that sharing a link would be against board rules so I won't go there - unless a mod gives the go-ahead.

Who Jessie is? I'm thinking when she was roughly 20 years old, she got coaxed out by a certain perfect ratio. Now it's two years later, she's graduated from Bowdoin and still living with her parents in Long Beach (NY), only now it's not just for the summer anymore, can't get a job in publishing, still neck deep in the steamy dreams of the guys along the harbor bars. Still getting high in her car.

Still getting high in her car. And after this song takes place, and things don't work out, she may also have gone out to Modesto, banging around the bars, trying to scrape up something new. Craig should have kicked it with Jess' cousin.

It depends on how you look at it. The site has been very good to the band so it would make sense that they got a copy of "Hurricane J" to post as well.

It's not that they haven't been good to the band. They really have (and Lifter Puller, at least after they pulled all their old reviews), but it just seems like The Current had this "world exclusive premiere" thing all lined up, and then Pitchfork jumped in a few hours earlier and said "Hey! Check out this tight new song!"
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they posted it. Now I can listen to it over and over, and not have to listen to The Current for five hours waiting to hear it.

The more likely scenario is that Pitchfork was given the "online" exclusive, and The Current was given a "broadcast" exclusive (allowing them to play the song before WOXY, KEXP, or other actual radio stations with an online presence.)

I suppose that is a fair enough explanation. On my twenty-somethingth listen. I'm now singing along automatically. I need this album.

first thoughts were it's a very radio friendly AOR song, like a poppier BAGIA track with a very hook laden chorus, and not the direction that I wanted THS to take, but it vastly improved on further listens when I listened closer to Craig's dark lyrics, not a classic by their high standards but still enough to whet the appetite for the album.

Initial thought: The Wallflowers?
Not that that's a bad thing.
Really dug it!

I dig it, and i like the more anthemic songs to balance out the expected heavy ballad/story stuff we don't want THS to be like the modern comic book industry - so bogged down in continuity that it can't attract new fans but seriously i love it

The whole story arc seems to be a slothropian dispersing act.
and also this lyric:
but 22 and bangin' around in restaurants isn't that much prettier than bangin' around in bars
recalls this:
she said 'it's good to see you back in a bar band, baby.' i said 'it's great to see you're still in the bars.'
i like the bars.

Pretty good. I like the second half of the song a lot more than the first.
Better than Sequestered in Memphis.

Oh sure, tell them to delete the thread that I accidentally derailed. There definitely isn't any connection, but when he says "Forget everything that I showed you this summer" it makes me think of the Puller song "Mission Viejo". I hope whatever he showed her, it was constructive.

When I say boy band I mean The Jonas Brothers not The Backstreet Boys... pop rock. I hate to be a downer but how anyone can even compare this to Hoodrat is insane... I was looking for a raw sound when Dean Baltulonis was brought back. Craigs lyrics aren't amazing but I liked them for their single.
Anyway I'm glad some of the posers liked it
