Having battled with a will to suspect Marillion of being massively uncool and taboo, about a year ago my mate's band were tour support to Fish and I went along for the ride for a few nights. The result is that 1987's "Clutching at Straws" is my most-played album of 2009.
Have you got any experiences of albums you assumed were shit actually being amazing?
Maybe I like this particular album because it sounds like Pink Floyd meets On The Road. Apparently Fish read a lot of Kerouac.

<---named after Marillion's Kayleigh. So yeah they will always be cool in my mind. I think i might have mentioned this before.
Are they really uncool? Most people in the USA have no idea who they are. But they were huge elsewhere, correct?

huge in Germany...
They were out of place over here in the UK pretty much - a sort of underground prog-rock revivalist clique. Marillion crossed over into the mainstream briefly and they supported Queen at one point and tried to crack America - they ultimately failed at that.

Teen progger comes out of the woodwork ... I saw Fish-era Marilliion several times. Indeed, I saw the last time they ever performed Grendel onstage, all 17:40 of it. I used to love them. I listened back to them not so long ago and it was a horrible experience. Nosferatu is right: they emerged out of an early-80s underground prog revival that also gave us Pallas (who were tipped for similar success, but never made it). IQ, Twelfth Night and others who I no longer recall.
They were never truly huge in the UK. Kayeigh was a big crossover hit single, but they never made it from theatres to arenas.
