OK, here's one for you. If you were going to tell a friend about the band and had only one song to play them to show them what the band was all about, what song would you play?

Bangin' Camp. Guitar, religion, satire, spun out kids, twin cities. It's got everything in it.

my favourite band ever in the world ever (little jump). it's like listening to the most joyous thing in the world and the live shows get more like the most exciting, incredible, wonderful, slightly religious or spiritual night i've ever had each time i go. the music is classic rock and roll, pure and simple. add a dusting of amazing lyrics, great fans, huge riffs, beer (or whiskey) and americana and you're nearly there.
then take them to a show. end.

oh, i don't have a song that i'd play. jus to make that clear. there are far too many that have converted so many different people in my life. it's up to them to listen to an album and make a connection, it is not up to me to force feed them a song that i happen to adore. different people have different ways of connecting to things and when it comes to the hold steady it depends on the person and what they are going to think is the best thing since sliced bread.

I just say it's really fun american rock'n'roll and that the lyrics are the greatest thing you'll ever hear but the singer might have to grow on you.

Depends on the friend, to be sure. Stuck between stations is my goto. But you got to know who you're selling to

Barfruit Blues. That song just has swagger. That's what really got my friend into the band. I just tell people that their one of my favorite bands, they play rock and have incredible lyrics, but the vocals probably have to grow on you.

Either "Stuck Between Stations" or "Banging Camp" depending on the friend. Sometimes I'll revert to "The Swish".
And to answer the question that wasn't asked, I describe them to people by saying "imagine your favorite middle school teachers started the best bar band on the planet." That usually gets the point across.

Usually "Stuck Between Stations."
And I like Klosterman's description of the band (or at least, Separation Sunday) - "Playing this album is like reading a novel about Catholicism during the soundcheck before an AC/DC concert."

If I'm not mistaken he did work for IDS, or some other twin cities financial firm. Tad always looked like a science teacher to me, until he lost all that weight that is, now he looks like a model. I wonder If that would work for me If I quit drinking? I'm gonna guess no.

"cattle and the creeping things" is the one that got me into them. i'd go to either that one, "stations", or "stevie nix."
i think i once described them to a friend as james joyce fronting a really great bar band with the energy of a punk band

Positive Jam. Steady, epic, beautiful, turns into a balls out rocker.

I'd also go with Knuckles.
My friend that got me into THS played Almost Killed Me for me a couple of years back on the drive to his wedding. Knuckles was the song that stuck out the most to me. It made me want to go buy their albums...which I did as soon as we got back from their wedding the next day.

Interesting. I'm actually undecided on which of two songs.. probably Hoodrat; great tune, wild lyrics; and its about Holly. Or Constructive Summer; if they don't get the salute to Mr. Strummer, they probably ain't gonna get the rest of it either. I also agree on going to a show. I took two friends last time and it was great to see the amazement on their faces.

Stuck Between Stations.
I think it features almost every single element that makes Hold Steady as great as they are. It tells a great story, it has references to pop culture, it mentions drinking and how the kids don't know what's good for them. It's a rocking tune, but not too heavy. It has some great piano parts, and the piano is used in a way which caught my attention in the first place. It shows what a great balance between melancholy, rock'n'roll and interesting words Hold Steady at it's best is able to find. And to me, it's their best song period.
It is, as we all know, impossible to choose one song who captures everything the best band in the world is about. But if only one song is able to do the trick, Stuck Between Station is the one.

It's gotta be an epic rocker with lyrics to match. So it's either "Stuck Between Stations" or "Stevie Nix."
