Today, walking into a charity shop (Help the Aged) to browse some 2nd hand books. I think you call them Thrift Stores in the US, right?
Now in the UK, Charity Stores are generally full of either old people browsing old nylon slacks and cardigans or just keeping warm or the odd vinyl vulture sifting through stacks of ancient easy listening records in search of the odd soul or jazz gem.
Anyway, today, in Help The Aged, an old dear, possibly in her 80s manning the till, chatting away to her about the weather and that, as you do...playing from the stereo behind her...the opening bars of...no it can't be can it...? It is! The vocals are in! It's Stay Positive!!
I was too bemused to ask her if she was intentionally listening to it...!
So, what's the most random place you've ever heard a THS song?

The only time I can remember hearing The Hold Steady out in public was at an Against Me! show last february, they played You Can Make Him Like You right before the band came out. Not very random, but still cool.

While watching the movie The Nanny Diaries. Apparently it's on the soundtrack, but I still had an 'oh shit!' moment.

i was the cause of a random ths moment for a drunk man at summerfest this past summer. i was playing bagia for the kiddies at work (i supervise at a fried food establishment, if you've ever been to any sort of festival in milwaukee, you know exactly what im talking about...) and a man heard chips ahoy! and proceeded to stick his intoxicated head through a CLOSED screen window and inform everyone that he "fucking LOVES THE HOLD STEADY!!!" granted, it was a bit loud, but as far as miltown drunks go, a broken screen ain't nothin (we once had a woman break a glass window. that was interesting...).

Sitting in a small town bar in the middle of nowhere, watching my Dad load in his gear (He's a full time bar band dude) and hearing "Stuck Between Stations" come over his P.A system right before sound check. i was the cause of a random ths moment for a drunk man at summerfest this past summer. i was playing bagia for the kiddies at work (i supervise at a fried food establishment, if you've ever been to any sort of festival in milwaukee, you know exactly what im talking about...) and a man heard chips ahoy! and proceeded to stick his intoxicated head through a CLOSED screen window and inform everyone that he "fucking LOVES THE HOLD STEADY!!!" granted, it was a bit loud, but as far as miltown drunks go, a broken screen ain't nothin (we once had a woman break a glass window. that was interesting...). Which establiment? I live in Milwaukee and love the few bars that I can find THS on their jukebox!

It was background music during a Peyton Manning interview pregame SuperBowl. I shot out of my seat, shouting "Peyton Manning is a Hold Steady fan!"

I live in Milwaukee and love the few bars that I can find THS on their jukebox! i work at saz's for summerfest and every fest imaginable. technically, not a bar, but with the ammount of booze that is consumed there, it may as well be. hahah. since i have some degree of authority there, i get to put in my ipod and pick the music. i got lots of the kids that work there to get into ths. its such an exciting day when you introduce one of your favorites and it becomes someone elses favorite, too!

Went to brunch at Erwin's here in Chicago on Sunday. It's a fairly nice restaurant, so I was surprised to hear 'Stuck Between Stations' come over the PA on their Sunday Brunch mix!

Hold Steady was on the radio at work once. This is kind of amazing because someone I work with thinks it's funny to put Delilah on. If you are not lucky enough to have experienced Delilah, it's a radio show in which people call Delilah, talk about their ninth grade significant other while Delilah asks questions like "Did you tell him/her you loved him/her?" and then they dedicate a song, perhaps "Lady in Red." However, on this night someone actually had the current on and "Sequestered in Memphis" was playing. I immediately went over to turn up the radio, realized it was after nine and some of the patients were sleeping so I didn't. I danced in the nursing station and one of my coworkers asked why I was so happy.

I'm sort of bummed that she didn't. That woman sounds like she's on all kinds of quaaludes.
