Is Holly dead?
I'm sure it could be interpreted either way, but with the constant jumping back and forth through time and throughout the albums I have a hard time trying to figure this out.

nah, i don't think so. she's not doing so well as of "First Night" which was, according to Craig, several years down the road. And she may still not be doing so good as of "Lord I'm Discouraged" if that woman is Holly, but all the dead people seem to be male. But she still seems to be kicking around, however you interpret the Stay Positive songs.

I tend to think Holly is alive and I want her to be. Throughout the narrative, Holly is stumbling toward redemption and then something happens and she falls. In the end of "How a resurrection really feels" it sounds like Craig is asking her to walk on back-to God or to life, I do not know. Her response is "I'll probably just go and get myself all gone again." Holly hasn't made it to redemption yet.
I did not want to use the word redemption because it's theologically loaded. Holly needs redemption, but no more than the rest of us. Holly's sin is not drugs or fornication or being a crappy girlfriend. Holly's sin is that does not recognize her own intrinsic value.
I love that Holly, not in spite of her experiences, but because of them, has the real lesson for the congregation. Whether dead or alive, she functions as a great symbol. But I want her to be alive and happy.

"Whether dead or alive, she functions as a great symbol. But I want her to be alive and happy. " Perfectly said.
