They played tears in heaven at my brothers funeral. The Zevon tune just devastates me everytime I hear it.

Tears in Heaven by Clapton- His kid fell out of a window, that song is incredibly sad. Keep Me in Your Heart For Awhile-Warren Zevon. Terminally ill, Warren asks people not to forget about him. Personally this song has a lot of meaning to me because once in passing, my dad told me that he wants it played at his funeral. Now my father is not terminally ill and will probably be alive at least another 30 years, but it's definitely a sobering thought. Not to mention how great it is that your dad is a Zevon fan...but then, he's probably my age.

He still gives me bands to listen to, in middle school he got me in to DBT, Wilco, etc., I got him in to the Hold Steady and some others. He's got some good stories about seeing the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Boss and others in the day, and we still go to shows together (I'm 20). My favorite story I like to tell about my dad is that when I was little he sang "Tenderness on the Block" to my sisters before they went to bed (my mom didn't like this because she swears it's about hookers) while he use to sing "Roland the headless Thompson gunner" to me. I loved the song and now it's funny to me that he was singing a song abut a headless mercenary to his 5 year old before he went to sleep.

Drive by Truckers have a line in sadness that real country can bring through, try "Little Bonnie" or "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife", especially if you know the backstory.
