Have they never heard of Elliot Smith?

i'd imagine they've not only heard of him, but know how to spell his name.

I guess his songs are more depressing than sad. Sorry I forgot the last "t".

he did write some sad songs, no doubt about it, but he didn't have a monopoly on them. he was but one man (and he always seemed like a mess to me).

some of those choices are dubious. (no children?) others perfect. i used to have a good sad songs playlist for when i really felt like wallowing in it. thinking of re-doing it now. but listening to enough sad songs to make a really good mix might kill me.

Im only familiar with the Damien Rice song so I can't really comment on the rest.

...and yet you can comment on what people have and haven't heard of. (joking aside, though, 'songs of love and hate' by leonard cohen is pretty essential if you're interested in misery.)

Round Here - Counting Crows would be a suggestion for sad songs.

Nebraska is a sad, sparse album, I'm welling up before the opener finishes.

Good call by Franz. I'm still in favor of the overtly sad 70's go for the tear ducts tunes. I've mentioned Terry Jacks earlier. And from classic country music, can you top George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today"?
It might seem passe' now, but REM's "Hairshirt" hits the right chord of melancholy for me. Smoking Popes "Pretty Pathetic" is more um..pathetic than sad, but still good. Serge Gainesbourg, Jacque Brel, the list goes on and on....

smj, you're right. it does depend on what makes you sad. whether it's melody, words, pain, heartache etc. we're all different.

I tend to get emotional at the line: "And If you never let me go, well I will never let you down." in the Gaslight Anthem's The Backseat.

hmmm . . . for all sorts of misery and despair, i favor the album Cry, Cry, Cry which was a one-off, I think, with Richard Shindell, Dar Williams, and Lucy Kaplansky. It lives up to the title. offhand, there is also Eleanor Rigby, lots of Leonard Cohen songs, and Bruce's the River - all capable of leaving me in the doldrums. also, all of Arcade Fire's Funeral. Dead depressing that album.

Maybe I'm horribly insensitive, but I always think 'No children' is funny.
Atmosphere's 'Yesterday' and 'Little Man,' 'Sam Stone' (Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose), and for some reason Big Star's 'Thirteen' makes me sad sometimes. I agree with 'He stopped loving her today' that song is so sad.

River of Deceit by Mad Season always gets me, along with Found out About You by the Gin Blossoms, Say Hello to heaven by Temple of the Dog and pretty much anything sung by Emmylou Harris and it maybe an obvious one but the Johnny Cash verison of Hurt (especially if accompanied by the video!)

It's one of the most fun sing-alongs I've ever experienced. Oooh ... New thread! (Or have we done a Most Fun Sing-Along Songs thread before?)

i missed The Saddest Music In The World last night... really wanted to see it i think anything off of 'Get Lonely' is pretty bloody sad, without the defiance you get on Sunset Tree

i have decided there is a difference between sad and depressing. sad songs make me cry cf.elbow - friend of ours , depressing songs makes me want to die. cf. the whole joy division - closer album.

Berlin by Lou Reed is the saddest most depressing album I have ever heard, and I absolutely love it.

Tears in Heaven by Clapton- His kid fell out of a window, that song is incredibly sad. Keep Me in Your Heart For Awhile-Warren Zevon. Terminally ill, Warren asks people not to forget about him. Personally this song has a lot of meaning to me because once in passing, my dad told me that he wants it played at his funeral. Now my father is not terminally ill and will probably be alive at least another 30 years, but it's definitely a sobering thought.

I agree with the Tears in Heaven. And Last Kiss by Pearl Jam always tears me up.
