Was listening to The Parish Room show in my little office on Monday and my boss walked by, stopped and came back......
Bossman: "Who the hell is this?!"
Me: "The Hold Steady- please if you value your sanity don't ask me another question about this band."
B: "I have to, they sound great. Kind of like Husker Du and Thin Lizzy."
OK wait whoa, did my boss really just say that?! I am getting way too excited for work.....
M: "Want to borrow an album? I have a few in the car...."
I go out and get him BAGIA, and patiently wait for my next day in.
Today he comes in and espouses the virtues of the "amazing yet cracked out lyrics" and starts talking about how the singer sounds like Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) but more gravelly like Graham Hart (Husker Du). How he loves the arpeggios that the guy on keys plays in a couple of songs and that the guitarist is the best he has heard in years "since those Arcade Fire douchebags made music into a bloated mess".
OK now I am not sure what I figured he was into before this, but the only cd I have seen in his car is Billy Joel's Greatest Hits (he now claims that to belong to his girlfriend). This guy is nearly 50 and just bent my brain a little bit, so I had to share........

"since those Arcade Fire douchebags made music into a bloated mess". He isnt far wrong there. Is your boss Jeff Lynne? i'd disagree pretty strongly for two reasons: 1) the arcade fire aren't exactly groundbreaking and haven't exactly changed anything. indie rock bands have been around for years and they (on 'funeral' at least) are better than most. 2) funeral only came out in '05 anyway. even if they sounded nothing like any other band on earth, the idea that they'd "make music into a bloated mess" in four years is kind of silly, no? i mean, they're not the pistols for fuck's sake! so yeah, a dumbass throwaway comment really, but he still gets points for saying ths are like a cross between thin lizzy and husker du.

A lot of bands followed in AFs footsteps and as a result created miserable bands that dont smile or connect with the people that got them there.

I dunno man, if you could see this guy- you'd love the fact that he even knew who Arcade Fire was at all. I figured him to be more of an REO Speedwagon, Bangles kind of listener...... And for the record I love Arcade Fire. I think Funeral is one of the best 20 albums of ALL time. Christ I saw Bruce call AF out onto his stage in Ottawa in 2007 to do State Trooper with him, and then they kicked into Keep the Car Running with Bruce and Win trading verses (its on youtube- you can hear me yell "Holy Shit!"). If Bruce thinks they are alright, then I must agree........ www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsukSiGcUng

The Arcade Fire are epic live. They put on a good show, and enjoyed themselves, unlike the support bands who were miserable bastards.
I may or may not have had tears in my eyes during Wake Up >_>

Didn't Coyne also bitch about Beck? Going to the press on two different occasions and bitching about other artists who he's shared the stage with isn't a very honourable thing to do imo.
And why does musicians need to be happy, because if The Arcade Fire were all constantly happy it would be fake. Not everyone shows their emotions with outward expressions.

Music is (for the most part) a joyful thing. I think this kinda turning into a Koob/ Radiohead thing.

I meant Wayne Coyne not Jeff Lynne. And now that comment is way less cryptic to me. I didn't know how the hell The Travelling Wilburys or ELO fit into this discussion..... Wow staying up till 1am watching hockey is not working for me today.

See. Don't under estimate the old dudes. Someone was buyin' those Husker Du records first time round. Indeed. Just yesterday I got into it with a woman at the kiddie's bus stop questioning my rock creds. Books and covers.

Most miserable band I have ever seen were The Stills. There was almost a fight between the lead singer and a fan. It was pretty funny, but I lost alot of respect for the stills that night.

. . . . And why does musicians need to be happy, because if The Arcade Fire were all constantly happy it would be fake. Not everyone shows their emotions with outward expressions. You know, when I practiced the piano back in high school, my mother worried about me because I was concentrating so completely I got this frightening scowl on my face. Actually I was never happier than when I was practicing the piano.
