This is one of the most revealing/interesting articles about the origins of THS that I've ever read--no doubt because it's by Craig.
Best line (referring to the Separation Sunday tour): "I was eating bad food, staying at bad motels, and playing life-affirming shows. I was certainly not living the life I thought I would at 34 years old. And for that, I was thankful."

"For a year, it stayed cool. New York had much to offer. I drank a lot. I saw a ton of music. I still loved rock'n'roll, but the best place for me was in the audience."
i can see a song in that paragraph......it is amazing to read an article by Craig(no....not me the important one) and seeing words that could be the start of a great song.....
and the last paragraph sums up THS perfectly....

Very well written, Great insight into the formation of the band as we know it today.
I always thought that one day Craig would write the Great American Rock 'n Roll Memoir, this is a great taste of what can (will) be.

Thanks for posting this. It's great to get a sense of what his prose style is like.

This was incredible!
But if they recorded 12 songs for AKM... How are there 16 songs, including the bonus ones?

That's a great article, fills in a lot of blanks for me regarding how its all started etc.
Plus how badly do I want that original sketches for Charlemagne (not that I'd ever wish to take them away from Craig!)

Very good article, but no mention of Franz. When did he join? How did they get together?

Awesome article, thanks for posting! Very good article, but no mention of Franz. When did he join? How did they get together? I always though he joined properly during the recording of Separation Sunday or very soon after. Though he and Peter Hess played on AKM too.

He was definitely playing with them live after SS but before BAGIA. I'm pretty sure it was a new thing.

I am calling for the Autobiography of Craig Finn...the man is one hell of a writer...in all respects.

As "5alive" I'm tickled to learn that Knuckles is the first song the band learned together.
