I'm on this weird kick recently where I imagine THS covering other songs. Two songs that have come up recently that I think could work: (1) Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk" and (2) Sonic Youth "Eric's Trip".
One that I don't think would work although it should be a natural: Born to Run.

Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis is basically a THS song.
I know Craig loves my local heroes Courtney Barnett and Nick Cave.. literally any of their songs would work. Maybe Dig Lazarus Dig for the latter.
KIDS by Pup Bad Catholics by Menzingers Drunk Kid Catholic by Bright Eyes Travelling Alone by Jason Isbell, mentions Ybor City
Half his current band is from MGMT, so he’s really gotta do Electric Feel at some point

I always wanted to hear them do Waiting For An Alibi or Still In Love With You by Thin Lizzy.
Righteous Path by DBT would also rule, even as a Craig solo thing. Also, Round Eye Blues by Marah.
I know this would be divisive but the whole “togetherness” of the shows could lend them to doing what I imagine would be a rioutous version of Rock n Roll Star/What’s The Story Morning Glory by Oasis.
Staying on the Britpop theme defo a second shout for Pulp - maybe Do You Remember The First Time?
Guns of Brixton by The Clash would be cool, especially the Shea Stadium version, got a sort of Entitlement Crew/I Hope This Whole Thing Didn’t Frighten You vibe.
Improbable but as this is fantasy land...
The Highwayman - Jimmy Webb Desperados Under The Eaves - Warren Zevon A Pair Of Brown Eyes - The Pogues 1952 Vincent Black Lightning - Richard Thompson Hey Jack Kerouac - 10,000 Maniacs Way Out West - Big Star King Harvest Has Surely Come - The Band

Mountain Goats and Hold Steady should release albums where they cover each other. I know it's too obvious, but it would have sounded absolutely amazing.
HOLD STEADY DOES MOUNTAIN GOATS:
01. Orange Ball Of Love 02. The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton 03. Jenny 04. First Few Desperate Hours (which they have done live) 05. International Small Arms Traffic Blues 06. Letter From Belgium 07. This Year (obviously) 08. If You See Light 09. Damn These Vampires 10. Cry For Judas
...and the list could go on forever.
MOUNTAIN GOATS DOES THE HOLD STEADY
01. Positive Jam 02. Your Little Hoodrat Friend 03. Charlemagne In Sweatpants 04. Stuck Between Stations 05. Girls Like Status (obviously) 06. Yeah Sapphire 07. Ask Her For Adderall 08. Runner's High 09. Entitlement Crew 10. Hot Fries
...and, yeah, pretty much everything else they've done.

HOLD STEADY DOES MOUNTAIN GOAT 04. First Few Desperate Hours (which they have done live) Wait WHAT For a second I wondered if I had dreamt that up, but I vividly remember seeing a video of them doing it in a small venue in England (London?), probably in 2008, or somewhere around that. But when I Google it, I can't find anything. Weird. I could have mixed it up with another song from Tallahassee, but I can't find anything about any of the others either.

You're right! Southwood Plantation Road. A kinda strange one-off.

Shuffle play this morning served up "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground and "Dirty Boulevard" by Lou Reed back-to-back, and the double shot of sweet Lou not-really-singing made me think that he's underrated as a Hold Steady comparison. Obviously, THS songs tend to be a bit more musically elaborate than the Velvets, but I'd really kind of like to hear what they'd make of "Romeo Had Juliette."

Their not that similar at first glance, but Craig's style owe a lot to Lou Reed. Romeo Had Juliette would be a great song for them to cover. Rock'n'Roll from Loaded too.

Gotta go with "Life Begins at the Hop" by XTC. It's got everything: Church Boys and Girls Cheap guitars Shouted chorus It's like a prepubescent Hold Steady song. I once suggested on Twitter that THS do a residency in the Twin Cities with the big shows at the Palace Theatre, sponsored by a Summit IPA (hop ... get it?). Craig "liked" it, so I suppose it *could* happen.

Oh no, I'm 100% serious. Shortly after Twinkies was released I was at a Craig solo show where I was really trying to get him to play it - even though it's a bit of a curveball

Finn sang and cowrote that one song from their second album.
