After the recent run of shows, who I mostly enjoy via Facebook, Instagram and careful reading of the setlists, I've backtraced my own live history with Hold Steady. With feweer and fewer visits to Europe, my total show count is currently at 14. I figured out it would be fun to make a list of songs I have and haven't heard live. Turns out I've heard more than I thought. It didn't seem that significant when I heard Separate Vacations, Going On A Hike or Wait A While back in the day, but it doesn't look like they make a return to the setlists any time soon. So I thought it would be fun to make a list of Hold Steady songs I've yet to experience live. I'm sorry to bother you with this, it's mostly for my own amusement. But it would be interesting to see how short the list from some of the veterans in here turns out to be.
And if anyone is able to find the setlists from the show at Melkweg, Amsterdam and HMV Forum, London - both in june 2010 - I would be very happy!

My list is pretty similar to yours I think, although I have heard Oaks, Navy Sheets and Cutters live. Also, I'm pretty sure they played Sweet Payne at the HMV Forum in 2010! They rarely play that but I've seen them play it twice in London, weirdly. Still haven't heard Positive Jam live after (I think) 10 shows

I was fortunate enough to hear Hot Fries in Baltimore years ago, though I didn't know the song at the time. Heard Sweet Payne once or twice, Modesto, Cutters, Jamaica and Criminal. And Sheets more times than I cared to. My holy grail tunes are Handshake, Arms and The Only Thing. Funny too, considering they're both B-sides, I've heard Adderall and Cheyenne quite a bit.

Fun idea. I've seen 10 shows and a soundcheck. I think Charlemagne, Payne, The Only Thing, 40 Bucks, and Oaks are the big gets from this list that would really get me going. And most of the other Teeth Dreams stuff I haven't seen -- I didn't get to see a proper show on the TD tour, just a chili cookoff in Richmond sans Steve.
The songs I've seen most are Constructive and Sequestered, which are the only songs I've seen at every show (10). I wouldn't change it.
Hostile, Mass Sketchy Metal Sweet Payne Modesto is Not that Sweet
Charlemagne in Sweatpants Don't Let Me Explode Crucifixion Cruise 212-Margarita The Most Important Thing
Arms & Hearts For Boston Teenage Liberation
40 Bucks Spectres Ballad of the Midnight Hauler
Soft in the Center The Smidge A Slight Discomfort Touchless Ascension Blues Separate Vacations
Bear and the Maiden Fair Criminal Fingers
I Hope this Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You The Only Thing Runner's High Almost Everything Oaks Saddle Shoes Look Alive Records & Tapes

I can’t remember much of the setlist from that night, but I remember they did Most People Are DJs. I have feeling I’ve heard Sweet Payne, so London might be it. I think it was only later that I really fell in love with the song. Got a similar feeling about Navy Sheets, but the only time I saw them between the releases of Stay Positive and Heaven Is Whenever, was at End Of Road 2009, and it didn’t feature there. I don’t think it have been played all that much since. I have few really rare tracks under my belt, with the exception of Sketchy Metal in Köln in 2014. That was quite special. And I guess Goin’ On A Hike and Separate Vacations didn’t stay in the sets for very long. Glad I got Our Whole Lives before it disappeared from the setlists as well.

Chili Cookoff at the Richmond International Speedway. 4 piece band, Craig on guitar, kind of a weird, garagey (but fun) set.

i've also seen a post-BAGIA show with stations! it was XPoNential Fest in 2009. a thunderstorm cut the set short, so they had to leave the stage after about 10 songs. i counted up all my setlists today (i've seen the band 13 times), and here's what i have NOT caught live:
Knuckles Hostile, Mass Sketchy Metal Hot Fries Curves and Nerves Crucifixion Cruise 212 Margarita The Most Important Thing Chillout Tent For Boston Arms and Hearts Teenage Liberation Both Crosses Joke About Jamaica Cheyenne Sunrise Two Handed Handshake 40 Bucks Spectres Ballad of the Midnite Hauler Going on a Hike Separate Vacations A Slight Discomfort Touchless Ascension Blues Just Saying Criminal Fingers I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You Big Cig Wait A While Runner's High Almost Everything Oaks Look Alive Records and Tapes all 6 of the new single tracks
i decided not to count covers, since then the list would really balloon. and i hate that i never got to see them do history lesson part II. i'd kill to hear separate vacations or a slight discomfort or records and tapes live, but i'm guessing those are never coming back. i could've sworn i've seen both arms and hearts and hostile, mass, so either setlist.fm is lying or my memory is. i had to actually look up a local article for the Mojo 13 setlist in 2010. nothing on setlist.fm for that one. weird!
i just did something similar for radiohead since i just saw them for the 10th time. i love compiling this sort of info and these might be the only 2 bands i've seen enough times over the course of their careers that play large enough venues to warrant regular setlist.fm updates. it's not like anyone was tracking weston setlists in the mid-90s.

Knuckles is another one that has eluded me. I was raging when Wealdstone texted me from Manchester saying it was on that nights setlist.

I've lost count of how many times you and I have BS'd about Weston stuff, but funny you mention this now - I was going through bins of old crap in my basement just the other night and unearthed a few setlists from the late 90's, in between Return to Mono and Massed Albert Sounds. Some great sets, one in particular from a firehall in York that spanned their career. They even did a few of the early 7" tunes that wound up on Splitsville.

Ha, me too. I have vivid memories of that show, with Dave saying "This song is about a really big animal" and playing Elephant, then following with "This song is about an even bigger animal" and playing Dinosaur. That was also the first show I heard The Normal Life, only to find out about the whole Return to Mono/Rubber Recs fiasco. Dave brought a cassette copy to the next show and slipped it to me. Damn I miss that band. Sorry to hijack the thread folks. Doc is the only other person I know who shares my Weston fandom & memories.

Now that you mention it, I remember that exact bit of banter. Crazy. I never heard Mono in its entirety until the years of Napster, but I definitely knew most (if not all) of the words to normal life, liz phair, and one or two others from seeing them live so many times.

Good amount I haven't heard - particularly stuff from Teeth Dreams and HIW as I hadn't hit a bunch of those shows when those albums came out.
I think I've heard everything on the first 3 albums minus Hostile Mass, Sketchy Metal and Crucifixion Cruise but honestly can't remember the 2 shows all that well from the Lancaster Lizard Lounge days.
So I'll just put my top 5 White Whales that I'd pretty much love to hear:
5. The Only Thing - easily my favorite song on TD and I think it's easily in the top 3rd of Hold Steady songs 4. Eureka - probably my 3rd favorite of the newer jams and I've heard Entitlement and Stove already so... 3. 212 Margarita - just always have loved this one, still possible I guess. 2. Teenage Liberation - 100% sure this has never been played live and 99% sure it never will, but this band continues to surprise and push limits so maybe? 1. Ballad of the Midnite Hauler

I'd love to hear midnite hauler. Finn asked me one time at a soundcheck had I any requests and when I requested the aforementioned tune he asked me had I any other requests as there was little chance of them playing it that night. Or any other night. I settled for ascension blues. They also played it later that night during the gig. The only other time I had heard it was at a soundcheck too. Why they left it off HIW puzzles me. Top tune.

I was lucky enough to hear Almost Everything, Oaks and Saddle Shoes in 2014 (Newcastle).
There are plenty I've not heard, but there are only two I feel I've REALLY missed out on (having "bagged" Adderall, Slapped Actress and Resurrection in London this year): Sweet Payne and The Only Thing (agree with Parock, this is way up my list of all-time THS songs)
On another note, are there any songs which you've heard too many times? I would go with Rock Problems and You can make him like you. Also, I thought Stations and Sequestered really suffered from a lack of keyboards.

They've played Hoodrat every time I have seen them bar once when they supported counting crows. I don't mind tho as it's one of my favourite tunes. I remember finn saying that they've played it nearly every night since they released it

I'd expect to hear most if not all of the singles every night but Hoodrat's never been one of my favorites. Much as I love singing along with standards like Chips Ahoy I'd gladly trade for something a bit less expected. I'll also second Ascension Blues. Heard that in Harrisburg right after HIW came out and it's one of the best tracks from that era. There are three or four on the record I'd easily swap it for.

I'm with all of you on The Only Thing. That's a great song.
I've seen the band enough now that, almost more than my white whales, I want to see/hear Franz on things he wasn't on before. I guess it depends on his relationship with that material.
As for songs I could deal with not hearing again: Rock Problems and Southtown Girls. Southtown is probably the weak link in a distinguished line of record closers. There are others I wouldn't miss if they took a show off, but I'm actually over those two.
though tbh, if it keeps being 4 years between shows for me, it's all going to seem pretty fresh. I was pumped to hear Stations and Chips and You Can Make Him and Hoodrat and all of the other usual suspects three times in Philly/Asbury.

My wife is with most everyone on "Southtown"; she thinks it's the weakest album closer and usually ends the disc with "Chillout Tent" but still screams every word when we hear it live.

And if anyone is able to find the setlists from the show at Melkweg, Amsterdam and HMV Forum, London - both in june 2010 - I would be very happy!
According to my notes at the time, at the Forum on 22 June 2010, the setlist was:
The Sweet Part Of The City Stuck Between Stations Hurricane J Constructive Summer Hot Soft Light Our Whole Lives Barfruit Blues Magazines Rock Problems You Can Make Him Like You We Can Get Together Hornets! Hornets! The Swish Barely Breathing Chips Ahoy! Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night Sequestered In Memphis Most People Are DJs Massive Nights Slapped Actress
Stay Positive The Weekenders Southtown Girls
I hope that helps.
