Ya I just wanted to know a bit more about the different types of accordions and I love listening to Franz play the accordion on the acoustic tracks I found so I wanted to know what he used. I didn't expect to get all this awesome information on top of the quick accordion lesson I just received. Awesome

Gee, this is an old thread! Once a month or so I get together with some friends and play music. This past weekend one of our number brought an accordion that belonged to his father, and has been untouched in his sister's attic for a long time. It's a 120-bass Silvertone. I tried playing it, and here are some of the things I learned: 1. An accordion is frickin' heavy! 2. Unlike a piano, there's no place on an accordion to set down your beer. The picture below was taken just as I realized this: 3. It's going to take a lot of practice before I can mentally map the bass keys. You can't see them while you wear the accordion, but that's probably a good thing, I should learn it by feel. Before band practice I looked it up on-line (music geek stuff coming up), and they're in columns of six: the third below the tonic the tonic (bass note) major chord minor chord dominant seventh chord diminished seventh chord Then the columns are aligned, not in a chromatic scale as on a keyboard, but in steps of a fifth. Makes a certain kind of sense: that way the classic "Oom-Pah-Pah" bass involves going back and forth between adjacent buttons. But if you're used to a keyboard as I am, it's not intuitive. And I did not succeed the first afternoon in moving across a row or down a column as I wanted, I kept moving the wrong direction. I also don't think I figured out where to place my left hand. It needs to have enough mobility to reach all the bass buttons; but there's a heavy strap on that side of the accordion, and my left hand also has to be securely enough in the strap to squeeze the bellows. I haven't cracked that puzzle yet. 4. Oh yes, the bellows. You can't just keep squeezing all the time. You really have to coordinate the bellows with depressing the keys. That's some technique I expect will come with practice. 5. A minor annoyance: Some of the bass buttons stick, and the accordion sounds a chord you don't want until you can release them (by briefly depressing another button in the same column, I found.) 6. Despite all this I did manage to make a little melody, at least. The song on which it all came together was Led Zeppelin's "All Of My Love." That's a keeper.

wow. so franz reads the board? beautiful. can i move the conversation in a slightly different direction? when are you coming back to THS? this is like the elephant in the room, right? am i missing something?
you were part of a crew that is/was growing in an unpredictably, exciting manner? are you just into other music? i miss you big time man. wow, the energy and excellence, along with the balance and chemistry: and every other fucking, magical, musical intangible i can possibly mention that equals greatness. uh, this hurts. what's the story, or is it too personal? not trying to pry, but bro, those first three albums are already classics; like musical feats that will stand forevah. i'm sure you know this. i just listened; you actually killed it on them.
if i beg; or would that just get weird? i could offer some headdy 'L', but I think i already had to apologize for that once. okay, i will chill. you are missed.

Played this on "Citrus", "American Music", and "Dance Music"; and rock/punk sessions. Good zydeco sound. wait... did THS cover Dance Music and American Music? or did Franz play on the original recordings?

Honestly, I can't see Franz coming back anytime soon. He went this way to do his own thing, cause he didn't want to get too stuck in and identified with the Hold Steady. Maybe someday in the future he'll come back. But I doubt he wants people to whine at him to return to the band. Steve Selvidge is a great addition; Dan Neustadt is a little different from Franz, but there's no denying he's got chops, and a pretty different style, which totally changes some of the piano interludes (even if the key's are pushed to the far back of the mix now). We enjoyed Franz as a member of the band, and he's moved on. Don't dwell on the past, enjoy the present, and just have a good time. That's what this band is about (well, not lyrically, but you grok what I mean right?).

don't think of it as Franz leaving your favorite band. think of it as Franz having more time to play with other bands who you might like you never know who he's going to tour with/play with next!

Dance Music: www.xfm.co.uk/Article.asp?b=reviews&id=464942Also is it just me or is it kind of crazy that they got on XFM and played 2 songs that you can't get in the UK and 1 cover? Awesome. American Music (with annoying sound effects from whoever put it up): www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqLombGD2IA

i wished that helped koji, and i appreciate where you're coming from, but what if colin greenwood (radiohead) was like, "i just want to pursue other things." or, if david gilmour was like, "no, this was syd's spot. i can't fill it."
there are rare combinations of musicians that are able to reach whole other levels. no disrespect to steve or dan, and i will adjust, but i just couldn't resist asking the man himself why the departure. when i listen to franz' playing on those albums and how it counters what tad (especially) is doing, i'm like dumbstruck with awe. it is like watching a meteor shower and eclipse during the same night, or having an orgasm with Holly on top of Mt. Everest.
as keyshawn so eloquently puts it, "come on man". we are talking about the feet not touching the floor; the love-child of poetry, spirituality, and rock & roll having a threesome. this will eventually require therapy.

The picture below was taken just as I realized this: Love that photo! ;D As a member of this group I can say I was very impressed with how much better jtd7 sounded at the end of the session than at the beginning. On the first page of this thread Franz made mention of an accordion cutting through all the "mid-range goop" sounds of the rest of the band and that's definitely the case. At some point I wondered if he should turn his mic down, until I realized he wasn't using one! I'm amazed that Zep didn't consider accordion for "All My Love" in the first place. It's a natural. we'll rock it in October. signed, Brian_NJ, Koob wannabe
