Possibly one of the most frustrating things as a music lover for me is loving a band with a name I hate or flat out don't get - or hearing a really bad band with a GREAT name and thinking "Bastards, you've got a name to live up to!".
Anyone else get this?

Personally I find the former more common. Drive-By Truckers, Neutral Milk Hotel, Grieving Eucalyptus and the Butthole Surfers are all stupid names for bands I like. And try and argue that The Beatles isn't a stupid name. Now I'm curious, what are some examples of bands that didn't live up to their names for you? I recently discovered this blog and they have a pretty funny post about bad band names: noisey.vice.com/blog/how-to-ruin-your-band-nameGranted at first glance I don't see any names in there of bands I actually enjoy, so maybe it's a post about bands with bad names AND music.

I believe that pretty much most band names are shit. The task is for the music to transcend the dumbass name.

Diarrhea Planet falls under "great band, bad name" for me.

Barenaked Ladies is objectively a pretty stupid band name, but knowing its origin and the nature of the band, I still like it.
Craig Finn's solo backing band was "Some Guns", named after the unrecorded song from CHFE. Love the song, but it's an awful band name.
There actually aren't many band names I dislike...Diarrhea Planet, mentioned above, is one. Butthole Surfers, also mentioned above. I think U2 isn't very good. In fact, a lot of classic bands' names, The Who, The Doors...like what the fuck does that mean? But I don't necessarily dislike those bands. If general, though, unless I particularly like a band name, I'm pretty indifferent.
Oh, XX/YY...smh.

. . . In fact, a lot of classic bands' names, The Who, The Doors...like what the f*** does that mean? . . . I read an interview with The Whigs in which they said they chose the name so no one could guess what they sounded like just from the name.

Band names are usually stupid/meaningless. Looking through my iTunes I don't really like any of them. THS definitely have one of the better names out there.
I still want to start a punk band called All Gonna Die, so we can walk on stage, scream "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!" and then rock the fuck out

There's a band around these parts goes by 'the Howling Fantods' which is a reference to the book Infinite Jest. I'm not willing to give them a chance, because anything less than stellar wouldn't be good enough for that name. Or I guess I would settle for Metal-As-Fuck, that would be a reasonable direction for that name.
Edit: And kids, the Doors is from an Aldous Huxley book title, 'cause the Lizard King was so deep, or at least he thought he was, and the look in his groupies eyes told him it was true.

The illustrator Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was fond of the word "Fantods" and self-published some of his books under the name Fantod Press. But I'm not sure that he went so far as to say "Howling Fantods."

Slash featuring Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators. Awful name for what should be just one word.
Punish The Atom is a brilliant name if you know your Ninth Configuration, the band were a feisty bunch but never really did much with it.

My bad, I was planning to chime in a few posts later. Apparently that doesn't fly with you. Thought it better than listing all mine right off the bat but alas, wrong choice! Against Me! are a band I love but not wild about the name, the exclamation mark in particular bugs me. The Horrible Crowes, ZZ Top (a struggle for most Brits), and Biffy Clyro are all pretty annoying for me too. On the bad band / good name front I think Drive Like You Stole It is a great name but never did anything for me. See also Hadouken!

I really like Saturday's Song by Hiss Golden Messenger, but their name makes me feel dirty and in need of a shower.

Wordplay!
Yeah Hiss Golden Messenger is just odd.
My band's gigging on Saturday, one of the other bands on the bill is pretty good but has an incorrectly placed apostrophe in their name. It makes me just a little bit sad.

I saw a band last night called 'Serpent Venom'. They were as bad as their name.

Under genuinely cool band names, I will go with "We Were Promised Jetpacks" and "Backyard Tire Fire". Music is decent too.

Saw a band once called "Let's Not Lose Mars To The Commies".
Was, and still am, completely on the fence.

Great band, but when half your set is saying "hi, we're..." you need to sort it out

I'm finally going to say it. I don't like the name The Hold Steady.
It's grown on me in the past seven years of fandom, though.
