First Record you ever bought: Metallica's black album. Had a few things before that but that was the first one I sought out and got with my own money. If we're talking actual vinyl though, I got the Promise Ring/Texas is the Reason split 7" and Rigid - One Boy's Tragic Story at the same time.
Last record you bought: the Skull Defekts - Dance in the Dream of the Known Unknown
Best record you own: way too many to list
Worst record you own: a WASP 7" with a song from the Ghoulies soundtrack
Oldest Recording you own: probably Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads
Record that reminds you of your best birthday ever: not sure
Song that makes you cry every time: Weakerthans - Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure
Record that reminds you of your first kiss: Weston - Got Beat Up
Least favourite Record by a favourite artist: tough call. When I really love a band I tend to back everything they do OR give up on it all
Music that makes you drive fast: anything by Converge
If you were a song you would be: the Ergs - Upstairs/downstairs
Record you have bought on most formats: either Harvey Danger - Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? or REM - New Adventures in Hi Fi or all 3 Joy Division albums on factory. Those are owned on 2 different CD versions and 1 LP. I've also got In Utero on a CD and 2 different LP versions.
Guilty Pleasure: don't believe in them. Never feel guilty about things you love. My Taylor Swift and Swans records sit happily side by side.
Record that you stole from your Parents: my moms Beatles LPs, though she gave them to me willingly
The heaviest record you own: all of the recent Neil Young records that are 200 gram vinyl
Record you wish you had but don't: REM - radio free Europe 7"
The prettiest song you ever heard: REM - Nightswimming
Record you'd love to hear for the first time again: Nirvana - In Utero
Dream cover version, who doing what by whom?: THS covering REM's "departure"

First Record you ever bought: on CD -- Green Day: Dookie. I think. The first one I remember going out on release day for was... Hootie and the Blowfish's Fairweather Johnson. I am Captain Cool. I don't remember what the first vinyl I bought was. Last record you bought: I just ordered Jenny Lewis's The Voyager and the new Spoon from my local. Best record you own: Revolver. Summerteeth. Exile on Main Street. Pinkerton. The Dirty South. Separation Sunday. Worst record you own: I honestly don't dislike any of my LPs. Oldest Recording you own: This Statler Bros. LP from the '50s. Record that reminds you of your best birthday ever: In college, I used to have big birthday celebrations where I'd gather as many friends from out of town as I could. We used to wear out OutKast's Stankonia at those things. Song that makes you cry every time: no tears, but Jason Isbell's "Dress Blues" and "Elephant" both hit me hard. Record that reminds you of your first kiss: Paul McCartney - "Uncle Albert" from RAMLeast favourite Record by a favourite artist: I'll give you one by each of my three favs: Wilco (The Album) - or - DBT's Go-Go Boots or THS's Heaven is Whenever. Music that makes you drive fast: currently: the new Lee Bains & the Glory Fires and J Roddy Walston & the Business's Essential TremorsIf you were a song you would be: Beck - "Jack Ass" Record you have bought on most formats: DBT's The Dirty South on CD, vinyl, and digital. Guilty Pleasure: I don't believe in these. If I like it, I like it. Record that you stole from your Parents: Unfortunately, my parents didn't keep any LPs. I took Led Zeppelin III, Black Sabbath's Master of Reality and Otis Redding/Jimi Hendrix From the Monterey Pop Festival from my in-laws' collection. The heaviest record you own: the new Mastodon. Record you wish you had but don't: The Replacements - Let it Be, Weezer - Maladroit, or Frank Ocean's Channel Orange The prettiest song you ever heard: "Goddamn Lonely Love" by the Drive-By Truckers. Record you'd love to hear for the first time again: Townes Van Zandt's version of Dead Flowers. Dream cover version, who doing what by whom?: it happened when Justin Townes Earle did "Can't Hardly Wait." I'd love to hear THS take on some Zevon (I vaguely remember them doing it, or am I making that up?) or to curate a record of Springsteen covers by my favorite bands. Answer where applicable.

New - $100 for REM - unplugged 4xLP. Same price for REM Live at the Olympia box set and eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations box set

Oldest Recording you own: Also Guthrie's 'Dust Bowl Ballads'
Record that reminds you of your best birthday ever: Dancing to Weird Al's 'Even Worse' at my party when I was about six. Don't know if it was the best one ever but it's the only album I specifically associate with a birthday.
Song that makes you cry every time: Sia's "Breathe Me." Never heard it before the Six Feet Under finale and probably wouldn't have given it a second thought otherwise.

Oh man Cut the Crap is a great call for that question. I almost bought a cheap used copy once just to have it but couldn't bring myself to do it.
I always wanted Return to Mono but never shelled out the cash. A few years into their reunion they said they'd be selling copies again so I bought one. It was a CDR.

If you drop a quarter on a cassette copy at a thrift store, you'll have payed too much. Always forget there's a fellow Weston fan on here. What'd you think of Mono? I always thought those versions of Liz Phair and Radio beat the shit out of the re-records on the Massed Albert Sounds record. And Bus Stop and Normal Life are two of my favorite Weston tunes, I'd heard them live and they were pretty much the reason I dropped the cash on the import. You catch any of the reunion shows? I was disappointed they didn't venture into anything beyond Got Beat Up at either of the shows I caught.

Return to Mono was such a weird record/era for that band. i saw them at least once a month around that time and they were clearly so excited about these new songs that no one would ever be able to get. it was almost possible to watch them get disenchanted with each passing show. it's a shame because there really is some gold on that album. "normal life" and "never better" are such awesome dave songs. jesse's one tune was decent too. i always felt like the record lagged in the middle, though, and suffered from weird sequencing. after "never better", there are 2 slow songs, 2 weirdly heavy songs that always sounded out of place to me (though worked well live), and then 2 more slow ones. i do really like the 2 at the end ("welcome mat" and "charade"), but sometimes my attention ran out before then. i never quite understood why they re-recorded "radio" after matinee, though. it was such a perfect closer to that record, and they did re-work it a little, but i never thought it was different enough to warrant another release (let alone two).
i ended up seeing a bunch of the reunion shows, which started out super fun but eventually soured me on the band for a while. it started to feel very contrived and put-together, not nearly as silly and chaotic as the band i went nuts over in HS. and when they started playing and demanding 90+ minute sets at shows, that was ridiculous. the return to mono CDR thing really bugged me, too. they advertised on their site that they'd "found copies of the album" to sell at shows, and it was a photocopied insert with a CDR for $10. that's pretty shitty.
(sorry for the long winded post. i have a lot of feelings about weston haha)

(sorry for the long winded post. i have a lot of feelings about weston haha) Heh, no worries man, it's nice to have someone to chat about Weston with other than the buddy I went to all the shows with. I saw them more than any other band - not sure how many times exactly, probably 20-30. You and I were probably at some of the same shows. A lot of my Lehigh Valley friends were Chuck loyalists and refused to support them post Got Beat Up but I loved Matinee and Mono, and even a few tunes on Massed Albert weren't bad. The first time I heard Bus Stop and Normal Life was at a show at a firehall in York, and I was so psyched for that new record - and then yea, couldn't get it anywhere. I'll agree about Radio too, Opening Chord/Radio is one of my perfect album opening/closing combos. That Mono CDR thing would've pissed me off too, I remember talking to Dave at one of the shows and him saying they couldn't even obtain any copies of it from Rubber Records. After Mono I wouldn't say I lost interest, but some of that heavier stuff - You Love to Fail on Mono, and To Some I'm Genius on Massed Albert, just didn't sound like Weston. I'm all for bands evolving but it was just too dark/moody emo for me from that goofy power pop/punk band I bounced around to. I always thought Jimmy's lyrics were better than most, and they suffered on Massed Albert too I think. I saw two shows on the last tour - Café Metro in Wilkes-Barre and the last show at the Pontiac Grille, with Jeff Kish on 3rd (and very unnecessary) guitar and the other dude on keyboards. I don't remember much about the Pontiac show (too much to drink) but the Metro show was lame - they sounded good but too serious, not enough goofy jokes (except for Dave's classic "we just came from having drinks at a bar... a Wilkes-bar"). They're still one of my favorites and their shows were some of my favorite. Great guys too - I saw them once in York and had just had surgery for a deviated septum, my nose was wrapped in gauze - Jesse said he'd let me sing his backup parts on a few songs if I let him draw a picture on my nose of anything he wanted, and I wasn't allowed to see it until after. He let me sing the bops on Mrs Perfect Girl and the "ahhhhs" on Record Shop, when I went to look in the bathroom mirror he hadn't actually drawn anything. One of my favorite Weston show stories. Heh, also sorry for the long winded post. I could talk about Weston for days.

also, i've always preferred the earlier version of "bus stop" from the FOE comp. if you haven't heard that, let me know I have, but thanks. Bought that with the South Park-cover issue at the HUB show in State College.

haha yep, i still have that south park cover issue. i don't know if i have any other FOEs that survived my several moves, but i always made sure to hold on to that one. we must've been at a bunch of the same shows, though the ones i went to were more in the philly/NJ area, not so much in the lehigh valley or further west in PA. i got into them right after got beat up came out and saw them maybe 4 or 5 times with chuck, and then probably 20 times with jesse. i thought he was a fine replacement, and i still really love matinee (that record meant the world to me as a teenager), but i get why people stopped paying attention after chuck left.
the one saving grace of massed albert sounds for me was always "summer's over". the 7" versions of "you kiss like an angel" and "volume hater" were decent, too, and got me really excited for the album. it's weird how that album goes on and on in the liner notes about how they wanted to capture their live sound with few touch ups, but it all sounded so damn slick. their whole charm and appeal was their sloppiness and goofiness and everything that wasn't slick. ah well, at least they made a bunch of great records before that.
i was also at the pontiac grille show. i thought it was a good send off, but pretty anticlimactic. i talked to dave for a few minutes afterwards and he seemed really down.
that jesse story is so awesome. THAT'S the stuff that made me fall in love with that band.

Ooh I forgot about Robert Johnson. I have a box set of his, I guess that would be older than Dust Bowl Ballads.
I'd put Cut the Crap below Lulu. Lulu is at least funny and I enjoy listening with friends to pick it apart. There's nothing funny or fun about Cut the Crap.

I think the thing is I came to Cut The Crap knowing it was utter bobbins but I had high hopes for Lulu. I wanted it to be everything Lars and Lou wanted it to be. When I heard it it felt like some Joaquin Phoenix level art prank or a pastiche from the internet. The idea that it is real and entirely serious does make it funny as dirt though.
