Good article, but I'm not too sure how I feel about this assumption:

It's a pretty rough generalisation. I'm sure Hold Steady fans can work back to LP and decide they like it more without it being some hollow proof of superior faith. I wouldn't think it was too controversial to suggest that Fiestas and Fiascos is a stronger record than Stay Positive or Heaven Is Whenever. But in many cases I reckon Hann's bang on the money.

I have a copy of Soft Rock on cd. Would anyone be interested in buying it off of me? I'll sell it for less than the $60 some guy on Amazon is wanting for it.
email me at heywoodhead at yahoo dot com if you're interested.

This seems like a good thread to ask this LFTR PLLR lyric question. In Jeep Beep Suite, Craig says "Eye to the sky, ear to the MCI." What is the MCI? nice bitter melon farm avatar Sunny D. Hah, thanks! Welcome to the forums, Frampton!

3 2 is 3.2 percent liquor beer. It's the kind of beer you can buy in gas stations in Minnesota. You have to go to a liquor store to buy regular beer.

Love me some Lifter. I never compare the two. Different animals. Love the lyrics on LP songs....just incredibly visual and poetic. Glad to have found them through THS.

First time I heard LP they reminded me of GVSB straight away. I asked Finn if they were an influence and he said very much so.

I'll definitely have to check them out then. I know the first LP record and their earlier singles get a lot of flack sometimes for basically being a more "generic" form of indie rock compared to their later material but as I've gotten older I've come to really love the early stuff. Even back in high school when I first heard them (around the '09 re-release) I found myself really liking a lot of their earlier stuff on Soft Rock, not even knowing it was from their first album or second album or whatever.

Does anyone have pictures of the back covers and inserts (if there are any) for any of the Lifter Puller 7"s that they'd be willing to post/share? I have the audio of all of the tracks from Soft Rock and Slips Backwards, but I don't currently have a means of actually playing vinyl so I have no reason to buy them. If there are any worthwhile credits I'd like to throw them on discogs, but mostly I just want to know what the whole package looks like.

Lifter Puller's earliest stuff from 1995 (Slips Backwards, Nassau Coliseum, Prescription Sunglasses, Emperor) also reminds me of Seam, another band from the 90's. Seam sometimes are classified as slowcore, but I would say that doesn't apply to a lot of their stuff. I would just say they were indie rock. Compare Seam's songs Berlitz, Rafael, Bunch, and Sweet Pea to those four LP songs mentioned above. Prescription Sunglasses is the LP song that sounds the most like Seam. Just wanted to drop back here and say that "The Problem With Me" has become one of my favorite records in this past year. Started a little slow but every song has grown on me so much. Thanks a ton for sharing them with me.
