since there's a thread about david bowie, i thought i'd start one for a similarly flamboyant seventies icon who doesn't get anything like enough respect nowadays. he's had his ropey moments since "going solo" in '73 (no more so than bowie!), but at his peak he made a lot of stunning, timeless music in a short space of time. his best albums - 'love it to death', 'killer', 'school's out', 'billion dollar babies' and 'muscle of love' - all came out between '71 and '73!
also, i can't help but think that the now sadly departed glen buxton MUST have had an influence on tad's guitar playing. listen to any one of those albums listed above and you're sure to get what i mean.
anyone else got alice cooper love?

Wayne Campbell: So, do you... come to Milwaukee often? Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century. Pete: Hey, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name? Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land." Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

i met Alice Cooper at the airport a few years ago. he was a super nice guy, really laid back and it seems like he would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

I love the stuff released by Alice Cooper (the group) between '71 and '73 (although Muscle Of Love is only decent, the other stuff is great). My favourite is either Killer or Love It To Death, I just can't decide.
I'm not a big fan of Alice Cooper's solo stuff, but I haven't heard that much really... he's had a bunch of decent songs as a solo artist but I haven't heard a full album that is great.

I like him in Wayne's World. (Is he in the second one? Or is that Aerosmith)

man, i love The Coop!
everyone home should have a copy of Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out (preferably the old school desk gatefold) and Billion Dollar Babies (with giant Alice dollar bill)
Muscle Of Love is patchy, but it's worth picking up on second hand vinyl in the faux stained cardboard carton
first solo disc Welcome To My Nightmare is terrific as well
the pre-fame Pretties For You and Easy Action (both on Zappa's label) are engagingly odd psych curios
and i still have a teenage soft spot for the hair metal chart comeback Trash...

It's all patchy - even Killer and Love It To Death are hard to like all the way through. I used to have Billion Dollar Babies when I was a teen metalhead, but I disliked it for not being metal. These days I think I'd prefer it to Killer, but am not inclined to go and repurchase.

i think billion dollar babies has aged incredibly well, but then i also think that killer and love it to death are great all the way through.

The comic book was not up to par, however.

"Billion Dollar Babies" and "Welcome To My Nightmare" are unbelievable albums, from both conceptual and musical standpoints. The vast majority of his stuff definitely is patchy, but I'd say pick up those two albums and then "Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits" (all Alice Cooper Band stuff) and "Classicks" (solo stuff) and you're probably set.

On a side note, I remember Clinton Heylin writing that Love It To Death is the truest recorded representation of the Detroit garage sound - far more than MC5, Stooges, Rationals etc

I'm an Alice Cooper nut. I love this thread already. My copy of Billion Dollar Babies has a signed Billion Dollar Note from when I met the man in london when I was just 15.
I spent obscene amounts of money on mint first pressings of Pretties For You and Easy Action.
Love It To Death and Killers have stood the test of time best in my humble opinion but there are some classic tracks on weirder less known albums like Muscle Of Love, Special Forces and even some of the oiled up Kane era 80's metal albums.
Top ten tracks from throughout his checkered output
Long Way To Go (Love It To Death) Generation Landslide (Billion Dollar Babies) You Drive Me Nervous (Killer) Wind Up Toy (Hey Stoopid) I'm the Coolest (Alice Cooper Goes To Hell) Gutter Cats V The Jets (Schools Out) Devils Food/The Black Widow (featuring Vincent Price) (Welcome To My Nightmare) Gail (Constrictor) Big Apple Dreamin' Hippo (Muscle Of Love) Freedom (Raise Your Fist And Yell)
'Guys a freakin' legend.

in addition to Vincent Price on Welcome To My Nightmare, the Coop's list of star collaborators includes Donovan!
the pixie folk hero can be heard rapping (kind of) on the title track of Billion Dollar Babies
