The National - About Today (particularly the live version)
Today you were far away and I didn't ask you why What could I say I was far away You just walked away and I just watched you What could I say
How close am I to losing you
Tonight you just close your eyes and I just watch you slip away
How close am I to losing you
Hey, are you awake Yeah I'm right here Well can I ask you about today
How close am I to losing you How close am I to losing...
because my dad got weepy when he heard this the first time. i can't deal with than image so well, it seems. i get tears in the ol' eyes everytime i hear it.

Broken Home, Broken Heart by Husker Du hits way too close to home most times, so I think I'll put that one down under this category.

I've got a soft spot for "Enjoy Your Day" by Alkaline Trio. Lame, I know, but it's terribly heartbreaking.

Against Me! - Acoustic EP and Against Me - We Laugh At Danger (And Break All The Rules) I can agree with the first one, considering it's about him breaking up with Kevin Mahon, but We Laugh at Danger? Really? I don't see it.

So passionate The bridge gets me (the bit before "on and on and on and...") And the live version=wow - when the audience sings the chorus with no instruments. It just gets me every time.

Ah, that is true. I feel there are equally as passionate songs on that record though. All versions of Jordan's First Choice are fucking amazing.

Joke about Jamacia gets me - The first solo and "We were kids in the crowd now were dogs in this war." Although the second bit is more because of the power behind it.

Pink Floyd "Wish you were Here" one of the greatest pop songs ever. It's 2 minutes long and leaves you wanting more.
Someone else mentioned this before but Joe Strummer & Johnny Cash "Redemption Song" I sing both these songs to my son when I'm trying to get him to go to sleep.

These always get a lump in my throat... Dennis Wilson - Thoughts Of You Cat Power - Sea Of Love Sufjan Stevens - Chicago (these are mostly sad tears at the 'when i was crying' bit, but tears of joy by the end) Beach Boys - God Only Knows, or Our Prayer. Me and my best friend both bawled our eyes out when we saw this (not at Coachella, but when he hit Brighton a while back). The choir is PHENOMENAL. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOonHWEsLTAi know, i'm a sap

also let's not forget the dual dagger of the Terry Jacks 45 "Seasons in the Sun" with B side "Put the Bone In". I mean, only in the 70's could there be a tune marketed to kids like me with the first song about a dying man and the b side about a dead dog. The 70s were the golden age of dead animals, with Old Yeller in heavy rotation on CBS movie of the week. Those days aren't coming back friends...
