For film, You must go find Basquiat.
Bowie as Andy Warhol is genius.
As with just about everything he does acting or otherwise.

okay, so i stupidly agreed to make my friend, hannah, a bowie 'education' disc. she knows little of the genius that is bowie and she needs to if am going to live with her.
so i stayed up last night trying to come up with a tracklisting and it's too freakin' hard. your challenge is to come up with tracklistings for 2 16-track discs. you can only use the following albums (because i only own the following albums);
the man who sold the world hunky dory ziggy stardust aladdin sane diamond dogs young americans station to station low "heroes" scary monsters let's dance
(i also have the changesbowie collection if that gives you a little more to go on).
GO! (annnnnd back to revising prototype theory).

I think I might have mentioned that before: its the piano style - sounds a bit like Drive in Saturday to me
Have you ever tried singing the words to Stand By Me over Killer Parties? And vice versa. Warning - once you start you can't stop!!!

I don't know what's on which album, but if I was being introduced to Bowie I would want; Rebel Rebel Ziggy Stardust Starman Changes Ashes To Ashes Life On Mars Suffragette City Rock N Roll Suicide Let's Dance David Bowie & Arcade Fire - Life On Mars Under Pressure Diamond Dogs.
Yes that does some like a singles collection, but I am a Bowie noob, who pretty much sticks to the singles, they are singles for a reason; they will sell because they are easy to listen to.
Rebel Rebel is a must. Opening track *cough*

Hi Hannah. I feel your pain! This is very very hard to do, as even for a greatest hits collection you need to include nearly every track on some albums. I found Aladdin Sane particularly hard. Anyway I've gone for a lot of obvious choices, which are all essential Bowie, and added a few personal favourites where possible. I make no apologies for the great tracks I've missed...
Disc 1
1. Space oddity 2. Starman 3. Suffragette city 4. Ziggy stardust 5. Black country rock. 6. The man who sold the world 7. Changes 8. Oh! you pretty things. 9. Life on Mars? 10. Watch that man 11. Aladdin sane 12. Jean genie 13. Lady grinning soul 14. Diamond dogs 15. Rebel rebel. 16. Rock n Roll with me.
Disc 2.
1.Young Americans 2. Fame 3. Golden years 4. Wild is the wind 5. Sound and vision 6. Always crashing in the same car 7. Be my wife 8. Heroes 9. Sons of the silent age 10. Scary monsters 11. Ashes to ashes 12. Fashion 13. Teenage wildlife 14. China girl 15. Let’s dance 16. Cat people (Putting out fire).

mashablues has a pretty good list - (black country rock!) but you need to just hand her the Ziggy album. It's it's own perfect mix tape, and really tells you everything you need to know - he's a Concept Guy who really believes in guitars. I think it's a perfect entry point.

masha your tracklistings are very similar to mine! except that i had to include 1984, station to station, cracked actor and width of a circle.
and meoskop, i thought about that (after i listed almost all of the album for my compilation). maybe that's how it should be done...

I'm definitely a Thin White Duke fan--"Station To Station" is my favorite. Blows me away every time. "Ziggy" is a close second, I love "Hunky Dory" and "Aladdin Sane," and "Let's Dance" has some great stuff on it. "Diamond Dogs" has two or three tracks I adore, but the album as a whole never really clicked for me.

I think it's a perfect entry point. *laughing* Yeah in retrospect Black Country Rock is quite a random choice! I think I was just listening to it when I was making the list and though yeah this is upbeat and quirky and would actually fit in to the track listing quite well. Apparently Bowie made the lyrics up during the recording session but ran out of steam near the end... Anyway it was good to revisit some tracks I've not heard for a long long time. Totally agree about the Ziggy being the perfect introduction especially as it was mine. masha your tracklistings are very similar to mine! except that i had to include 1984, station to station, cracked actor and width of a circle. I love all of those as well and really should have included Moonage Daydream and Absolute Beginners! Very hard but totally enjoyed compiling my list. Have you tried to do this with THS?

i did include moonage daydream, it makes me happy so i had to. my list turned out to be a 3 disc set with 12 songs on each. i am pretty smitten with the whole thing. i included black country rock as an example of bowie's madness. plus, it is a great song! and i live near the black country...
on the THS front, yes i have tried. tried hard. eventually i had to do it from a setlist. it just made it easier, because it was hurting my brain A LOT. i cannot decide what is better than something else because there isn't such a thing to me with THS. and how the hell do i know what is best to get 'em started?!

"Well I love the little girl and I'll love her til the day SHE dies" (emphasis mine) Personally I think Scary Monsters is the last great Bowie record. Just sayin'.

Ooooh, a Bowie mix. I have made these before. I like to arrange my mixes by "feel" and I'm too tired to think of that now. So I'll just do a chronological list of songs I think would be good for a Bowie beginner.
Space Oddity: because it is perfect The Man Who Sold The World: well known but not quite as appreciated as some of his "big" songs, perhaps... And I think it would sit well in a compilation Andy Warhol: largely because most people have heard most of the songs on Hunky Dory already and so let's pick a less well known one that's still pretty awesome Soul Love: not as popular - again, Ziggy is a well known album, and Soul Love is very pretty and pretty catchy, but if you want an intro to Bowie you don't just want the most well known songs, right? Panic in Detroit: Rolling Stone said it was Mick Ronson's "essential recording" as a guitarist! It's a pretty cool song. There's also a 1979 version which you can find on the Heathen bonus cd. Rebel Rebel: because alright, you DO need some anthems. Station to Station: will probably tell you if you'd like this album Sound and Vision: I think this gives you a sense of late-70s Bowie "Heroes": it's just a great song, and it's really very precisely of its time, so it works in this chronology Ashes to Ashes: now Bowie's moving into the 80s proper, but this song has many nods to earlier personas. Let's Dance: a lot of people hate 80s Bowie. But if you like this song, you'll probably like this album, and like the song says - put on your red shoes and dance the blues.
The Heart's Filthy Lesson: Bowie is back on form with Outside, one of the creepiest concept albums EVER, and this song is skin-crawling yet weirdly sexy. I'm Afraid of Americans - I just love the Nine Inch Nails vibe. Survive - switching gear here, and a real feel of introspective Bowie as the 90s draw to a close Everyone Says "Hi": this should make most people smile, and it showcases some of the themes 00s Bowie is thinking about. New Killer Star: let's finish on a dance number.

Ok, I totally ignored Hannah's proscriptions about albums etc. But anyway, there's my Bowie history in short form.

the first disc went down REALLY well. we have a convert. my tracklistings are based on a few from each of the albums i own, in an order that i think sounds nice. i am trying desperately to get my fucking-piece-of-shit burner to work for the second disc because it's actually better than the first (to me) and the third one is even better than that!
