Dumb Question Time: How is bootlegging illegal. I don't really understand how it works. I just presumed they purchased unsold merch from previous tours. And also do they need the band's permission to produce any merchandise with their logo/name on it? they produce their own designs, generally using images cribbed from bands' sleeve art, and print them onto cheap shirts themselves. at no point is any legitimate merchandise used - the band's permission is legally required, but is never sought because it wouldn't be granted. not to mention that the dickheads selling the stuff are violent thugs much like ticket touts.

I will research it, because from the response it is something that I should learn about. Can't the police just come and stop the bootleggers if they don't have a licence?

yes, but generally they make sure they're in a position to make a quick exit if necessary, and the police often have more important things to worry about in city centres at 11.30pm. i've seen them get busted before, though, and it was most satisfying.

I'm really hungry and don't have any food, I walk past a house with a pie cooling on the windowsill... What a tit! By merch from the merch stall, kids. If you can't afford it then, yes, you do have to wait until you can. Soz. *nods* listen to the man. bootlegged shirts are stealing... don't touch 'em.

Matt, if you had no idea about the illegality and proft-skimming of bootleg shirts, then I apologise for the harshness of my tone. But not for the message itself.

It's not as though the official merch is expensive either. I bought two online via the official website and had them mailed across the pond (obviously) and IIRC it didn't cost any more than a regular shirt does over here and was certainly less than a lot of other bands merch - and they are cool t-shirts, man. I got the red one (with the ship on it) and a grey eagle one. to go with the 'Twins' one I bought in Birmingham at the Academy show. I don't think I've ever owned three shirts of the same band before. That's what THS do to you!

You have to watch the sellers on the official THS merch stands. Last year my daughter was given a t-shirt by a shady character called Ben - probably not his real name - after the gig in Cardiff. Now all she wants to do is see the band every time they are on tour - even in far away places like Newcastle and Manchester. She wears a strange blue top with a white number on the back and has stolen all their CDs - from me. She has posters of them and set lists on her recently decorated bedroom and I'm sure this obsession started with that t-shirt in Cardiff.

As with any drug, you have to hook 'em while they're young.
