Hey tlon, Those photos were taken by Wayne, whose (excellent) blog is here oceansneverlisten.blogspot.com/ - you can contact him from the details on his blog. He doesn't have a post up about the concert as I write this, but no doubt will soon. Awesome, awesome concert. IsBillyThere

the three guys with 'SO MUCH JOY' written on their shirts, one word per shirt That was so cool - and even cooler if you were walking past the pub across the road before the gig, read it as JOY MUCH SO, spent a few seconds with your brain churning before you realised you were looking at some true clever kids. Put a grin on my face that has lasted till today. My second THS gig, my wife's first. We were down the back with the rest of the old folks, bopping gently and arthritically to ourselves. Better energy than when I saw them in Bristol UK, though the sound was a bit rubbish a couple times, but that didn't seem to matter. I think my wife's in love with Craig - she kept going on about how compelling and charismatic he is. Fortysomethings aren't supposed to have rock star crushes are they?

why not? apparently 30 somethings were crushing on Cohen last week i'm still gobsmacked about seeing Leonard Cohen and THS in the space of one week. something tells me i should choose one over the other but nah the shirts were amazing in themselves - everybody seemed to haveing obscure i was up front, as close as i could get... it was mad in the best possible way my friends are in love with Franz. its hilarious how out of place he looked, tho i see more Sydney musos who dress like him then like Craig the logo was kinda creepy and cultish and awesome... i've noticed Dylan and Cohen doing the 'giant logo' thing too... anyone else?
nice to see people filling up for the Vasco Era too... you can't have a unified scene without support for local music (tho they're from melbourne)

As one of the elderly, I urge you to do yourself a favor and get thee to the front row and rock out. You'll feel seventeen. Or maybe you'll feel a seventeen-year-old. Either way works.

the three guys with 'SO MUCH JOY' written on their shirts, one word per shirt The sound was a bit rubbish a couple times, but that didn't seem to matter. Overall a great show, tremendous fun, the band giving their all, playing a fantastic range of songs, and the crowd was really into it. But the sound WAS terrible, especially in the middle of the room - way too loud and really distorted. Took the edge off the first half of the (most anticipated show of the year) for me, and didn't help me win over my companion, newly introduced to THS. Moving to the back helped a little but moving to the front was the best strategy - closer to hearing the band's monitors maybe and you got so caught up in Craig and the crowd's enthusiasm that it wasn't so distracting! But next time, guys, turn it down a notch or two so we can hear those rollicking piano rolls, the brilliant guitar work and, most of all, those wonderful, endlessly entertaining lyrics. You don't need to bludgeon us with volume - you're better than that. Way better. Apart from that, my ears are still ringing...!

Apart from that, my ears are still ringing...! there was the same problem at the first Laneway they played - the sound in the Basement was so messed up i couldn't hear any of the lyrics being up front helped but in some of the lyrically 'denser' songs like Chicago Seemed Tired it was hard to hear things

It seems like Murray (Wiggle) Cook has been at every gig I've been to for the last 15 years. Buffalo Tom, Brian Wilson, Ryan Adams, Wilco, The Who, Neil Young the other night...the list goes on and on. he was standing behind me and Twang at THS in Syd the other night. I wasn't there, but when Wilco played the Big Day Out a couple of years ago, Jeff Tweedy spotted Murray in the crowd and in between songs said "Murray?...Murray Wiggle, is that you? Far out, my kids are gonna shit!" Also drinks at my local from time to time, the magnificent Golden Barley, the reason I am so freaking hungover today.

haha! really? i didn't know that... i've probably seen him around, too. i was at Neil Young's Big Day Out set and two Brian Wilson shows last year i figure if we've got the Wiggles on our side we can start getting the kids young and converting them.... :-P seriously i don't have kids and i never watched the Wiggles as a kid so if i saw them i'd TV i'd probably be like 'hey its that dude from all those gigs!'

Fuck yeah.
In the immortal words of Captain Murphy:
"THIS SHOW ROCK[ED]!"
I just hope they come back soon (and even play a NZ date so I bring all my poor friends, perhaps).

wow small world? i was to the left of Jemma from about halfway through the show. we met online and later we hung out in a photobooth and wandered through the Hyde Park fountain and stayed up until 4 when she told me she would name her kid Halleljuah i said she'd probably think she was named after the Leonard Cohen song and then wondered why THS didn't cover it as a joke (sorry... THS show was a week after Cohen, so the Old Master and My Favorite Band are kinda overlapping) she's back in Brisbane now though i convinced her to incorporate the THS tat into her bird tat you need to join my Unified Scene facebook group and friend me... and post that review. i want to keep all the THS fans in touch... we gotta stick together. the vibe at the show was awesome and if we keep going to shows together and hanging out we might be able to keep sydney from getting too cold one small quibble: you mention waiting through the supports. i thought The Vasco Era put on a great show, with some neat banter about how nobody cared about them and some really loud, rollicking blues but yeah... awesome review. SO MUCH JOY indeed i've got a THS review started but like the Cohen review i feel humbled... like actually trying to put what i saw into words would cheapen it. i'm used to passing judgement on bands in a few sentences. i can't do it with these guys i was thinking of copying Craig's ending for my band but telling everybody in the crowd that they're Milfs might not go over too well

I had a ball. The vibe was indeed awesome and I left feeling I'd been a part of something awesome. I saw some faces at Laneway that I recognise from this gig. Was great that so many people got to check 'em out twice. I wonder if the band noticed those who'd been there both nights.

yeah i saw lots of people from Wedensday... my fave were some really intense tatooed guys with fake Jersey accents and some guy on another music board said he 'got converted' which was nice... i think the crowd split into Girl Talk and Hold Steady, and i reckon alot of people who were on the fence are now fans i hope so anyway

Hi there again all... been recovering from my ill-health last week, but naturally didn't let myself miss the Metro show.. Such a good time, such a great set and a great vibe. Thanks to everyone I met there for helping make it such a good night. I wrote up a review on my blog here: stephen-turner.net/2009/02/10/review-the-hold-steady-live-so-much-joy/ -- hope you like it.

great great great review... thanks man!
one thing i disagree with: "but is now experiencing the real success that any musician looks for (but in a more grassroots honest way than “typical music fame” these days)"
if Pitchfork hypes your band you pretty much are following the new typical path to music fame not that thats a bad thing
