So Emily Brodsky brought her signature stylings to Orlando, playing the punk venue Black Box Collective. Calling the joint a venue is pretty charitable: it's a big garage. Oh and there was a not-so-secret show by a band you probably haven't heard of: Against Me!
Due to the headliner, the place was jammed with crust punks and Orlando's squatter bike kids. I don't think they were ready for uke tunes. But she was classic Emily, and knocked it out, telling the crowd to fuck themselves when they talked in her set. She really brought the goods. Great stuff. Also, I recommend Spoonboy as well. Nice guy. Good tunes.
We can devote another thread to the dichotomy of Against Me! and its original fan base's ongoing battle with the band... I have strong opinions.

i'm going to see emilyn tonight, i hope. i was unable to talk any of my friends here into a house show in a slightly sketchy neighborhood - though i think i got one person to buy the cd. so, it seems likely to be me and a bunch of teenage punks. i need cooler friends just so that i'm not the only old lady at the punk show.

I saw Emilyn at the Harvest of Hope festival, along with a bunch of other bands. I must admit, I now have a HUGE crush on her. What a rad chica. I was very happy to hear her cover of "Friday, I'm In Love", and she seemed very happy that I was so happy. Her originals really took me by surprise. How someone can evoke such a wide array of emotions with just their voice and four strings is quite remarkable. The song "Real Good Men" resonated particularly strong with me.
After her set, I approached her to give her my regards, and she was very friendly. I told her how much her set affected me. We talked THS for a minute, hugged it out, and then I bought a CD and left. It was definitely one of the highlights of my weekend. All of you should purchase a copy of "Greatest Tits" immediately. Can't wait for her to come to the Baltimore area.
(In regards to AM!, the most fascinating dichotomy regarding the original fanbase is that they were the ones that provided the momentum for the band to be anywhere near the major label stratosphere. The band, and the movement behind the band, was almost like a force of nature. The thing that was so striking about AM! was that they truly seemed to have the ability to make an impact on the mainstream music culture. Look at Tom Gabel's most recent output, Heart Burns. The first single, arguably the catchiest on the album, is called "Anna Is A Stool Pigeon. It tells the story of an environmental anarcho-activist who was entrapped by a 16-year old FBI informant in way over her head. It's a story that so desperately needs to be heard because it represents alot of what is wrong with our so-called Homeland Security. If this band is in a position to bring these stories and viewpoints to a wider audience, I see no reason to turn my back on them, or cry sell out.)

But I literally just walked in the door after a 13 hour drive back from Florida, and I am so exhausted. Otherwise, I would be there in a heartbeat!

I think some of the fans are bummed that he's not singing about living in squats, but it would ring false if he were.

Ah, I think I saw Erik Petersen play there last year! The show was so crowded, he decided to move it outside to the kid's driveway. It was quite a sight to see over a hundred kids sitting in the front yard of some neighborhood house singing along to some rad folk punk.
