I'm headed to the Bloomington Indiana show from Atlanta and started wondering...
What's the most time you've spent traveling to get to a show? I travel constantly for work, so the travel doesn't phase me at all, but is fourteen hours a long hike for you guys too?

that's a helluva trip! i'm strictly east coast myself, but you're probably in the running for distance travelled. assuming we don't count anyone who has worked crew or merch, others have travelled further, though. i forget who it was who flew from scotland to one of the western US shows on a recent tour? and oldworld, i think, was at the T5 show in NYC. and jwd may win most total miles traveled with his willingness to go anywhere in the US and following a UK tour. though stephanie probably has the win on total shows attended. and for road trips alone, i don't know.

I can't say I've done long road trips strictly for shows, but I have arranged vacation road trips around show schedules. This past November, we were going to a wedding in Mexico, we live in Vancouver, so rather than fly straight to Mexico, We took an extra week off, and drove down to LA, catching THS shows in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco along the way. Did something similar about a year and a half ago.

The greatest distance for a show was minneapolis to new york for me. And i will be doing it again in a couple months. one of the many advantages of college.

That was Chris who came from Scotland. I forget his moniker. I went from SF to Minneapolis, and recently, SF to Charlotte, then drove to Asheville, for a couple DBT shows. I guess that was....12 hours? Maybe a little longer, counting airport time and all. I'll be coming to Bloomington via Indy, and following through Omaha, flying home from there (through Dallas).

Chicago to Baltimore, then to New York immediately after. Then Chicago-Madison-Minneapolis-Fargo. Doing Chicago to Albany next month. Traveling to Fargo oughta put you in some kind of Hall-of-Fame. Not necessarily the good kind. I'm still trying to explain that one to people and decided to file under dirty little secrets.

In thinking about this, I realized I've never done a big drive for a show, really. In 1990, I drove from Algonquin Park back to Toronto to see Bowie. That was probably three hours. I'm a flyer, not a driver.

just between you and me and whoever happens to be reading this thread, it was one of my favorites. But even the good folks of Fargo couldn't understand why we would travel to their fair town... Fargo was awesome, because it was Emily, Susan, Neil and I - and we met Brady there. Allison Locey also made the gig, and that was sweet! Brady flipping out during Milkcrate Mosh - a request he made over a month before - and Tad offhandedly saying he'd be the guy playing it - all through the boards - was extra awesome. Also fantastic: The live debut of "The Ballad of the Midnight Hauler" and fn rising from the floor to play the organ on "Both Crosses", which I'm unsure if they've played too many times before or since that show. Small gig, the Canadians were funny, and Steve Barone standing outside the venue with his cardboard "I need a miracle" sign were things I'll never forget. Great night in the middle of nowhere.

i am pretty sure we have been through this before ... (on the old board) so, as i recall ... stephanie gets credit for being and documenting her travel from milwaukee to the second hold steady show ever ... in baltimore ... as i recall, about 6 people attended? stephanie, in the last discussion of this topic, conceded jwd had traveled and seen more shows than her. longest trip ever for a single show? not sure, but for america only, lk made it from portland to the second ybor city show. the map i made for that showing everyone's travels ::

Five years worth of travel are all here. Second show photos here. I think the only real gap between #7's show-going madness and mine is that he flew to England and I didn't... other than that, we've both been totally ridiculous all over the US. Being in the Midwest has its advantages; the longest I've ever traveled in hours one-way is probably 13 or 14, when I took Amtrak to Pittsburgh and then vanned it back with the dudes in '04. Holy fuck, that was half a decade ago. As echoed above, folks from the UK/EU who come to America are probably the longest distance travelers. I saw 42 Hold Steady shows in 15 states (19 cities) between 2003 & 2008, which I'm pretty sure is more than anyone else who doesn't get paid to be there -- though I'm sure I'll be surpassed in miles and numbers this year, as I'm out of the game for the indefinite future. Keep on keepin' on, kids.

I didn't know that there were any of us left, these days! I never read any such country-trotting adventure stories on the old LifterSteady Yahoo group, or whatever it was, but apparently the stories did exist. I really had no idea. Awesome.

There's a really interesting cultural difference between British and American people in their approach to travel. I have a lot of American friends who'd seemingly happily drive 2 hours just to go to a restaurant, which in a British POV is "bzuh?" This is what happens when you live in a geographically compact place.
