So I've got something of a dilemma.
My CD collection- over the dozen moves I've made in the past fifteen years- has grown jagged and rag-tag. Lots of missing discs/cases. Doubles. Scratched up and unable to be played any more.
So my dilemma is this: do I hang on to the remaining four or five hundred discs I have- organized and neatly displayed on this big shelf that I'll really have to make room for in my new apartment? Or do I bite the bullet, buy another 100 gig external hard drive and rip them all into 1's and 0's- thereby having them in a nice, archived state ready to be played at any moment- but then discard of the discs somehow- only keeping the ones with real sentimental value?
What would you do?

I would have a digital version for my ipod and keep the discs to make your friends jealous that you filled up 2 shelves with Cds.

always keep the discs, especially if they arent burned copies. It's worth it for the art alone.

I keep digital versions with me for the ease of moving and the hard copies at my parents' house to drive them insane and ensure they don't give my bedroom away to the dog. Granted, this also put them at risk for my kid brother to claim as his, but that also ended up getting him into THS, so I guess it's a fair trade.

Yeah- I think that sounds like it's gonna be the best bet. Rip them all to digital, archive and catalog it all and box up the majority of them and stick em in my parents attic.

Aww. Everyone who rips their record collections and then stores the discs elsewhere makes the baby Jesus (by which I mean, me) cry. I live for my record collection (most recently pictured here). But I am a record fetishist, and everything I own came with me when I moved out on my 18th birthday. There isn't a lot in this life I love more than opening records and looking at all the artwork. It's all part of the experience! My favorite records' liner notes are all tattered and highlighted from being kept in my pockets at various junctures in life. How could you give that up?

I display the CDs I own, and sometimes take them out to view them, so it's not like I just put them in some box in my basement or closet. It's good enough for me!

CDs must go on display! Nice full CD racks are sexy. Plus I listen to the physical cds on my hifi downstairs anyway.
Even sexier than full cd racks, though, are full bookshelves. Mmmhmm.

I've only met a couple of boys with record collections bigger than mine.
Consider this a challenge.

I have a wall of them (sold my extensive lp collection to a welsh pal for a quarter in the 80's - think we both cried) Burn 'em and display 'em.

keep as many as you possibly can on display - walls look bare without them.

My dad is awesome for this wall. wow I wants it. To answer the question in this thread: Rip them to an external hard drive but DEFINITELY keep the real cd's. If they're missing the cases or are damaged you can put them in a box somewhere but don't throw them away...
