Stay Positive tops Chris Willman's list [EW's other list, by Leah Greenblatt, gives the nod to TV On the Radio's Dear Science]:
1. STAY POSITIVE -- The Hold Steady ''Classic rock'' and ''indie rock'' usually stick to their respective corners, but the Hold Steady never got that memo. Sans vocals, you might mistake them for the E Street Band rumbling with Hüsker Dü, and their fourth album stretches to invoke Bowie, Zeppelin, even Richie Sambora. The only thing standing between them and an arena full of Bic lighters might be idiosyncratic frontman Craig Finn, who passionately spits out songs about substance abuse, sex, murder, class differences, and growing old gracelessly — all with the narrative drive and character mystery of great short stories. If you could use a booster shot to stay positive about the state of rock & roll going into 2008, there's none better than this glorious, funny, sad, and altogether rousing album.

I used to read EW, and I have to say that this is sort of surprising to me.

I've read every issue since 1990, and have always been surprised how much "fringe" stuff they cover considering they're a million-plus circ mag. They color outside the lines

I sometimes read EW at the gym, and have seen several mentions of THS (and many more of Madonna, Kirstie Alley, and Brangelina).

Entertainment Weekly is sometimes good, sometimes bad...
their review of Beedle the Bard - Bad
This article and placement - good

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but this is sort of the secondary list - they did what seemed to be an official list and then "another view" or some such.
That said, I was awfully happy to see it.

yeah but the "another view" is usually what i read and agree with, i never agree with the actual magazines list (no matter what magazine, because seriously.. they know nothing) i like the small "oh btw" lists like this, because they actually end up meaning more.

I read the review of Stay Positive. I believe it got an A-. Reviewer said it was a near-perfect cd. EW, LONG time ago had good, reliable reviewers. Wouldn't have found Jack Logan, wasn't for them.
