i seriously love all the new songs i've heard. i cant stop listening to the live versions from toad's place. i keep finding new things to love every time i listen. HIW will probably be my favorite record this year, and while it might not top SS, it might top everything else. who knows.
i'm just glad they're expanding and not re-writing stuck between stations over and over

This page is filled with amazing posts. Sorry this one isn't really... I just sampled all the album on iTunes (you only get 30 seconds, but it's worth it), and it sounds goddamn fantastic! Very polished sound, you might be surprised when you hear the studio versions of the live tracks. I got goosebumps as soon as I put on A Slight Discomfort. However, those expecting another Stations or Constructive as an opener might be disappointed - The Sweet Part Of The City has a sort of country feel. Still sounds really, really good, though! Reminds me a bit of DBT and Wilco. Soft In The Centre has a good chance of becoming my favourite. Loved the live recording and it sounds fantastic here too. There seems to be a lot of backing vocals - lots of ooooohs and ahhhhhs. Sounds good. Only worry is that they might be mixed a little too high. I can't believe I got that from 30 seconds of each song... 3 WEEKS TO GO! (for us UKers) I don't think you can do that on the US iTunes. Damn... Yeah you can. Just scroll to the bottom of the iTunes store and click "Change Country" and select UK.

By the way, Ascension Blues = Sharp Cross. So scratch that one off the rarities/never released list.

WOW. These other new songs sound incredible. Especially The Sweet Part of the City and The Smidge.

Thank you for that hot tip. Soft in the Center and the Smidge are great. Sweet Part riffs on country, and Touchless sounds like it could be pretty cool

I can't bring myself to listen to the song previews. It would be torture to hear 30 seconds and then have them cut out.

I did change the country and the UK version came up with the previews. And as tempting as it was, I didn't listen to anything. It's cool to know that this works, though. A little off topic, but if you change your country, does anyone know if you can buy things from the UK store or will it yell at you because you are outside of the country? I know there are some cool EP's and things for other bands that were not released in the US itunes store. I should've tried it when I was doing this last night, now I'm at work and just thought of it. I doubt it works, but it would be pretty cool if it does.

In anticipation of seeing them TONIGHT! in Cleveland, I've been going back and listening to the new tracks after some time away from them. I've gotta say I'm still not totally sold on Hurricane J, but I'm starting to really dig the rest of them. Can't wait to see it all go down tonight.
I've got that old time motherfuckin' Hold Steady feeling.

I just wanted to say that I think the new songs (and especially Hurricane J, but also Soft In The Center and The Weekenders) have improved a lot from recording from Toad's Place to the one from Westscott. The backing vocals are in tune, the timing is better and it sounds a lot tighter.
It won't affect the album tracks, obviously, but it's nice to hear things are going in the right direction.
Also: Touchless is great. I have a feeling it will end up like the why-isn't-it-a-part-of-the-album?!?!?-track, like Girls Like Status and Adderall.

Cool, [half-assed sarcasm]so after Hurricane J blows up at radio[/half-assed sarcasm], I can reminisce and be proud that I saw them play it live when they didn't quite have all of the kinks worked out yet. I kinda like that, actually. I don't know, maybe it's just me. But I like seeing bands make tiny mistakes sometimes, or being off key or totally butchering a solo - even if they butcher it on purpose. None of that was directed at THS directly, just a generalization.
I've only given repeated listens to the first 3 tracks. I listened to Barely Breathing once and liked it a lot, but decided to stop listening to the new stuff until the album comes out. I think I'm probably in the minority, but I really like The Weekenders the most out of the 3 other songs. I don't know if it's the loud-soft dynamic that I grew up on or what, but I've probably listened to that more than Rock Problems or Hurricane J. But now it's all on shut down until May 4 - or hopefully May 3 if my pre-order comes a day early. I saw that they ship on 4/30, so it's possible.
btw, I wasn't slamming Hurricane J at all with the comment about it blowing up at radio. Just saying I don't think that'll happen, I'm sure a lot of us agree on that.

I don't listen to a lot of radio, and when I do, it's norwegian or danish stations. So I really don't know what's suitable for american or UK radio. Still, I can't see the the potential in Hurricane J. I think Rock Problems is a way more catchy, radio friendly tune. But this might be a culture thing.

No THS songs are about to blow up on the radio. There are certain stations that will play them, but those aren't the stations that the majority of Americans are listening to.
Sequestered In Memphis got a lot of play on one Chicago radio station (XRT), and Hurricane J probably will too, but the audience of that station is mostly made up of people in my parent's age group. It will never be played on the local pop stations, alternative station (unless I request them like I used to at work), or other rock/general stations (unless Jack feels like it).

I can guarantee that Hurricane J will not make its way to CT radio - well at least one of them. It's at least not the style that WCCC (106.9) would play. I don't really see many Metallica/Disturbed/Seether fan types digging Hurricane J. They'd probably call the station and complain if they heard it. I guess the other station (104.1) which plays some modern stuff may have an outside chance at playing it. They probably play 80% '90's alternative and 20% current stuff, so maybe. I'll call sometime to request it and see how that goes...probably something like this "The Hold Who?" There's a catchy little tune about our state here: www.myspace.com/jesushchristrocksFirst song on their playlist, obviously.

I'd love it, I'm just arguing against previous posts in which THS was seen as selling out or trying to write "radio ready" pop music.

Yeah, I want more people to get into the band. I just don't think it'll happen via radio in CT. It would be great for the band to have some success at radio, they deserve it. There was a facebook update about the pre-orders and I was shocked at some of the replies where people were accusing the guys of selling out because the itunes version has album only bonus tracks. I always saw that as a way to entice people to buy it in that format, not as selling out. The bonus track thing doesn't bother me, I've pre-ordered through the THS site and through itunes. If I like a band enough, I'll buy multiple copies of an album to get all available bonus tracks. And I highly doubt that the guys have any say in whether or not the bonus tracks can be purchased separately or not through itunes.
Although I like The Weekenders the most so far, I think Hurricane J and Rock Problems have the potential to do well at radio.

Love The Weekenders, okay on Hurricane J (the last minute or so is the strongest part) and not really feeling Rock Problems.

Yes, the new songs are getting better and better live. Hurricane J was awesome in Pittsburgh, and A Slight Discomfort and The Weekenders were two of the best songs in the set. Touchless was great too, I had the "Should have gone touchless" (or something like that) line in my head all day. And Going on a Hike was just amazing too...they changed things a little at the end, and Craig's harmony with Tad singing "everything is just kinda floating" is a great end to the song. I like the recording of Barely Breathing, but its not quite the same live. That was the only new one I wasn't sold on live.

I feel kind of privileged to have seen Hold Steady live only two times, but still got to hear Goin' On A Hike, Our Whole Lives and Separate Vacations, and pretty much being the only one singing along.
