So far the absence of FN on the new stuff (on the 3 that have been streamed + the Toad's Place recording) isn't really noticeable.
The one exception is 'We Can Get Together' - from the live recordings last year it contained a wonderful repeating piano refrain (after about 2:15) which just stuck in the brain. Subtle, but it made the song.
Now, I haven't heard the recorded version, but you can't hear the same refrain at all in the Toad's version. I hope in the scramble to make it more guitar-oriented that particular keyboard subtlety hasn't been canned. It might just be that the keyboards were mixed right down, but in reality it's one of the bands quietest songs so they should have been heard if they were there...
And the new backing vocals (not on last years version) were atrocious, but that's not specific to this song!!

I've really been digging this one- very much in the First Night/Lord I'm Discouraged mold. My first exposure to it has been through the Toad's show, but I can see where it might benefit from more keys. Hopefully theres more emphasis on the album.

I know what you mean about the ropey new backing vocals. But for what it's worth, I think it's the best sounding of the new songs and could see it becoming one of my favourite THS songs given time - I think it's THAT good.

Yeah, how do people feel about the newest version of this song? I like the early You Tube version the best (which I believe is the version tanner is referencing?). The couple of newer live versions I've heard have featured a much slower, deliberate, almost warbly delivery on the refrain at the end that I thought took away from some of its emotional impact. Maybe I'm over-analyzing it, but I do prefer the earlier version quite a bit better. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoy all the new stuff I've heard.

I'm guessing that we can get together is the same as the track that was labeled "heaven is whenever" from the ithaca show... i loved it, but i haven't heard the most recent recording. Can someone toss up a link?

I prefer the newer version vocally, but one of the earlier versions I have has an amazing solo that gives me goosebumps every time... I don't think any version can top it. Hopefully the studio version will but I doubt it.
