I am in love with Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead at the moment - I've been picking up the collected issues as graphic novels. My only beef is that they changed the artist after the first book, Tony Moore is a much better artist than Charlie Adlard in my opinion. I WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST THIS! My dad bought volume 9 today, can't wait to dig right into it. Twist after twist after twist...

Yes! It's fucking awesome! I went to get numbers 7 and 8 today, looked it up on the little computer search thingy they had, and I saw the synopsis for number 9.. I think I spoiled something for myself.

Can I just say, that I love being able to finish a whole story in an afternoon with graphic novels? Also: Black Hole, anyone?! Black Hole is fantastic! It's so heartbreaking and the art is just perfect for the story. I don't know how they plan to turn it into a movie.

I want to make a Walking Dead tv series. No screenplay, just using the comic.

As great as graphic novels are. AND THEY ARE. I still love the poor cousin the comic book more. I picked up a few issues of RAW recently from the 80's. I love the object and the context as much as the content in the comix (sorry old underground freak brother upbringing). They're amazing. Like little time machines to a place I never went but understand perfectly through the ink and colour.
My favorite thing is picking up cheap battered 70's and 80's comix for a pittance and then reading them in a park or bar or cafe and leaving them behind for someone else. Old DC and Marvel are very good for that.
Art Spiegleman's Sketchbooks which have just been published are enchanting. A nice bloke in the Pub let me flick through his copy on Saturday. Pricy though.
Oh and as I've pretty much avoided the actual topic all the way through this post.
*I loved Preacher*

I'm so far behind. As in 2 years of books in a bin box waiting for me to catch up on my life. 100 Bullets and Fables are absolutely in there.
Our library has a fair selection of books - read Fun House & American Widow & American Born Chinese and several others on their dime. I'm a massive fan of Astro City type things- superhero's slightly akilter.

Just picked up the new Batman and Robin today, part of Batman Reborn. Art looks awesome, haven't read it yet though.

Just finished "Black Hole" thanks to this thread.
Think I'll do "Bone" or "Blankets" next.

I bought Crazy Hair by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean yesterday... it had been open in the window of this comic shop in Brighton for weeks and everytime I walked by I kept thinking I should go in see what it was because it looked really special. Turns out it is! It's gorgeous

As in "I just read Watchmen for the first time? "... envy, of so. I really dig those Bendis stand-alone books, especially "Torso", but "Jinx" is hot too. --- (I can't find my copy of "Elektra: Assasin" anywhere... I was going to lend it to a friend. First book I ever "noticed" that was painted instead of drawn.)

I'm the strange guy for the last decade or so screaming about how comics are literature and then throwing Watchmen at them as proof.

Just picked up the latest in this Image mini-series called Gemini, by Jay Faerber, and the art is by this awesome guy called Jon Sommariva. Only one issue to go, and as exciting and great as it has been so far, I feel like there's loads of loose ends, too much stuff going on for a five-part series. As people are talking about him, Brian Michael Bendis is excellent. Has anyone read his Ultimate Spider-Man? Soooo good. And Terry - Scott Pilgrim is AMAZING! I'm up to the latest book now, and I'm really looking forward to the film!

I just got into graphic novels the past couple of years. I love American Splendor. Harvey Pekar can do no wrong in my books. Blankets is my absolute favourite graphic novel. I need to reread it again. The first time I read it, I couldn't put it down. Stayed up all night reading it. Anyone recommend anything else by Craig Thompson? I also read The Alcoholic by Jonathan Ames, Another Dollar and The Beats by Harvey Pekar and Too Cool To Be Forgotten by Alex Robinson recently. All good reads. Just ordered this: www.amazon.ca/Asterios-Polyp-David-Mazzucchelli/dp/0307377326/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1249081473&sr=8-2Anyone else read it?

Never heard of it, but the art looks really cool, what's it about?

It's about an architect who never gets any of his designs built. I was really into the drawing which is why I ordered it. This is where I first heard about it: nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/57736/

Yeah, for sure. When I showed it to a friend of mine he said that he did the drawing for Batman: Year One. That got him pretty excited.

Apparently Asterios-Polyp is supposed to be this incredible graphic novel that they predict will be a major influence for future graphic novelists... It's meant to be awesome but I can't afford it right now!
