best: DBT - Southern Rock Opera Beatles - White Album Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium - not the biggest MV fan in the world, but this record is amazing...it's actually 3 records. NIN - The Fragile Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre Led Zepplin - Physical Graffiti
Worst Jay-Z - Blueprint 2 Wu Tang Clan- Wu Tang Forever Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie - lots of good songs, but lots of filler, could have been one disc easily. RHCP - Stadium Arcadium- hate to jump on the bandwagon on this one, but damn that record is dreadful.

best: Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre I really need to get round to listening to that. I've been listening to ...Is/Was A Real Boy all week, but I just find double albums way too daunting. When your faced with 30 songs it's a tough listen. But 14 songs is easy, probably why I prefer F&F over Soft Rock.

Best:
Tom Waits - "Nighthawks at the Diner" The Who - "Quadrophenia" Ryan Adams - "Cold Roses"
Worst:
Smashing Pumpkins - "Melon Colie..."
Melon Collie is just so fucking awful. There are 4 good tracks on a double CD. That's never a good sign.

The Beatles is the clear winner, here, but I'm going to go for something of a non-standard pick and say that The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request is easily one of the best, most consistent, least-likely-to-date double albums of all time.
Has anybody else heard that motherfucker? Stunning.

Oh, and Sign o' the Times is laughably overrated, in the hierarchy of double LPs. I love it, but it's no unassailable recording of the gods. A very good record, no doubt, but not even Prince's masterpiece, let alone a be-all, end-all masterpiece for the ages. No record with that ridiculous, 40-minute "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" is an all-time great, if you ask me.

Can I just defend The River for a second? As a double album, it was the studio album that got me totally into Springsteen as a kid. I'd only heard Born In The USA at the time and there were layers upon layers of great stuff to pore over.

For some true indie input, I'd like to recommend "Smartie Mine" by Dan Bern as a great double album. Bern collected B-sides throughout a 5 album span, and rerecorded some hits(including One Thing Real and Tiger Woods) and put them onto the double-disc "Smartie Mine". These tracks could hardly be considered second resorts, however, as they're truly great songs that really flow together, showcasing Bern's knack for humor and pathos in his songwriting.
This is the beginning of me plugging Bern on the board on a level that is unprecedented.

Stay Positive could have fit on one vinyl record. But it's a valid point that double album is a nearly meaningless term nowadays; equally it's true that having 80 minutes to play on a CD with has resulted literally thousands of albums that are too long. I think they only way to define a double is an album that was originally released on two 33rpm vinyl discs. i see where you're coming from, but i'd argue that a double album nowadays would have to be released on two separate compact discs (unless it was released before cds and then reissued as a single disc like london calling). it's not that it's become a meaningless term so much as that the restrictions of the medium have been eased. i have plenty of albums on two 33rpm vinyl lps that i wouldn't consider double albums - stay positive and the majority of albums by low or motorpsycho, for example. essentially it means you can bring out a 79-minute single album (which isn't necessarily a good thing by any means), but it also adds the element of choice - it's not unusual to split less than 80 minutes of music into two cds for the purpose of a double. there are already several albums in this thread i don't consider doubles - deloused, daydream nation... pah, it's not that important anyway. anyway, my picks... godspeed you black emperor! - lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven (genuinely shocked nobody else has mentioned this one.) rapider than horsepower - stage fright, stage fright, this is my big night the beatles - white album the clash - london calling motorpsycho - trust us motorpsycho - timothy's monster lift to experience - the texas-jerusalem crossroads husker du - zen arcade
