- my amazing friend charlotte who's bringing up the Loudest Baby in the World (and also one of the most adorable) on her own and holding things together even though she's bipolar and the dad's fighting for custody and making fucked up claims about her because she won't let the baby stay at his house because there's always people taking drugs there. when i go to her house she always gives me tea in the same mug, and last night she told me that she sees it as my mug and doesn't let anybody else use it. - the song 'counting sheep' by tar...feathers. holy shit this is good. - banana fritters. - small kindnesses. - ancient history. - steph. - oh! and this! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7829527.stmmy friend ewan gets voxpopped about 1 minute 21 seconds in, stoned off his mash. i've been sitting at my desk laughing like a drain for the past five minutes.

Any particular kind of ancient history, Mike? I know you like Mayans (iirc)... I would say that Ancient Rome is a "hobby" history of mine (as contrasted with the kind of history I do professionally). I'm also teaching Late Antiquity this term, which is a bit late to be ancient and a bit early to be medieval. 1. Not being super tired today despite having had a couple of hours' less sleep than I'd like! 2. Hot chocolate in a flask in the library! Woopwoop. 3. Getting enthused about teaching! 4. Sushi at Yo! tonight. 5. It's not as cold this week as it was last week!

i'd say mainly the maya and the egyptians, i suppose, at least as far as who i've learned the most about, but as far as ancient history (and modern history, and cultural anthropology in general) goes i'm pretty much interested in anything! it's all just a hobby, though. i don't think i could see myself going down the academic route with it.

And why not?!
Seriously, though, I always find it heartwarming when people are reading history in their own time! History has become a lot more popular in the last decade amongst non-specialist audiences, which I think is cool.

i just don't think i have the patience or attention span to last three years on practically anything, and if i felt obliged to do it i think it would quickly stop being fun for me. i prefer to dabble at my own pace. at one point i did think i wanted to be an archaeologist, though.

Heh, it's not like you do the SAME thing all the time (As you can guess, I'm pretty in favour of higher education, given this is my EIGHTH year of it! ) I wanted to be an archaeologist at one point, too, but decided that I'm too impatient to do the methodical field work, and not scientific-minded enough for current methods of working.

see, i think i would enjoy methodical field work. i'm good at being methodical. it's just that my mind has a funny way of taking in information, and sometimes when i try to read things it straight-out rejects them, if that makes sense - it's like my mind is fizzing around everywhere except whatever it is i want to concentrate on. it's frustrating.
and that's the dark secret about why i never went into higher education.
