So, those of us at the Chicago book event got an early copy of the book. It's fantastic. The rainy Sunday (prior to the great Empty Bottle show) allowed me to power through and read the whole thing. And, I'm just honored that I've been around here since the early days of the board. And I "know" a lot of you who contributed. Some of you I actually know in person. And, I'm kicking myself for not submitting something myself.
Anyway, the Chicago shows were fantastic. And this book is just what I needed. I'm just feeling really lucky that I found this band and this scene when I did. 20 years, wow. See you all in the pit again soon I hope. Me and my kid now, which is even better.

I have no plans to attend (though I wish I was) but I'm holding out hope for you guys. These surges usually only last 2-3 months, so by March, cases should be going back down. Hopefully they don't make any rash decisions to postpone/cancel anytime soon.

This is awesome. Thanks for posting. Family Farm
CF: "The lyrics mention the Eddie Van Halen guitar solo in 'Eruption,' and here we are when the record's released and Eddie Van Halen has passed. And I think that the reason I love this and why I bring this up is because a lot of people talk about things like Springsteen or The Replacements when they talk about The Hold Steady. But in some ways, Van Halen was also a big influence. There's one guy who's kind of talking or yelling, and there's another guy playing a lot of guitar solos."

Yep, also on my list for the weekend. I can't stop listening to Hard Drive. Really enjoyed her when she opened up for Craig, looking forward to digging in more.

I'm not going to top what muzzleofbees had to say (great recap) but man, this sounds unlike any THS album yet it's a logical growth from everything they've done before. I love it. What a gift after an awful, awful week here in Texas. Can't wait to dig in with the lyrics in front of me. After a few (sneaky!) listens over the last couple of days, I'm not sure there is a weak song on ODP. Exactly what I needed.

Man. 2020 has been an excellent year for new music. I have a short list of 30 that I'm having trouble culling down. Working on that.
Here's to ODP in 2021!

All streams still up/active as of Wednesday evening in case anybody hasn't rewatched yet I have them all but the soundcheck. Did that go away for anyone else? Edit: To be clear, by "have them all" I mean access to the streams. No downloading here! (Though I can't wait for the hopefully imminent Bandcamp release.)

I never (in a million years) thought these livestreams would make me feel like I do. This band, man.

A couple of thoughts about We Can Get Together from yesterday: 1. I'm relatively certain that I'll never hear a version any better than the one that opened the encore. First, it sounded absolutely incredible, especially the keys from Franz. Then add in the circumstances of the pandemic, and people literally crying in the zoom chat, and it's hard to imagine a scenario that would be more emotional. 2. Did anyone notice that during the soundcheck Craig did the "Business" air quotes (from Sequestered) when he said "and listen to your records" at the end of the last part: Heaven is whenever we can get together / Lock your bedroom door / And listen to your records. Has he done that before? I guess I should have picked up on it from "lock your bedroom door", but it tweaks the meaning for me a bit. 1. Totally agree. Just re-watched it before I saw your post. Man, we need to hear that version again when we're all in the same room. 2. Haven't watched the soundcheck yet, but I'll look out for that. I see how that would tweak things. But damn, I'm gonna still sit on my floor and listen to records. Hopefully with friends soon.

I sort of think that's worth celebrating. Well said! (What FB group are you talking about? I didn't know there was a group there. I only stick with FB for the music groups. No where else I can talk to the "kids on the net!")

Opinions are why we are all different yet still love this band. Love it.
I think "Beer on the Bedstand" and "At Least Not Tonight" could replace "The Smidge" and "Soft in the Center" and you have a better record. Oh, and throw that "We Can Get Together" guitar solo in there!

Just gave another listen to the whole second record. It's obvious they left off anything that felt too "Hold Steady." The callbacks to Killer Parties, etc, the guitar solo in the alt "We Can Get Together" etc. I get what they were trying to do, but I think they left some great stuff on the cutting room floor. These are definitely the best batch of outtakes we haven't heard before out of the last few deluxe editions.

So I got the main email with the announcement, but I haven’t gotten the presale code like I used to. Has anyone gotten it yet? Not yet - anxiously awaiting Hmmm. I guess we're not getting a password.

Hey Unified Scene. Getting pretty quiet around here for obvious reasons. I'm sad that there won't be any "people touching people that they don't even know, yo" anytime soon. But, I just wanted to wish all of you and yours well and hoping for lots of health and safety for ALL of our friends in the scene.
Me, I'm listening to a lot more records and trying to adapt to the new normal. But, all good.
Lots of love.

I've been seeing the song "Perfect Crosses" show up on setlists, but haven't seen a show yet. Is that a new one?

I agree. I probably wouldn't be here either if it wasn't for Bruce. And, I have a great group of best friends thanks to him too. Happy 70th Boss!

So, the narrator "Got pretty screwed by the chef and the chauffeur." But how/why? Did they get "screwed" inadvertently because the information was wrong? Or did the chef and the chauffeur intentionally screw them? If the latter, what's in it for the chef and the chauffeur? I can't think of anything, so I figure it must be the former. Any theories? I always thought they were set up. It was a trap. And it didn't end well......

Having this much new material does seem to mean that there is a bit less variation in setlists than there has been in recent residencies. Playing a decent number of new songs plus all the 'must play' songs (stations, chips, Memphis, killer parties etc) may leave less room for the real deep cuts that have surfaced at some other shows in the last couple years. On the other hand, this might change as the constructive summer shows roll on and the band has more time to rehearse etc. Hey Spencer! I couldn't have had more fun at the Seattle shows. The band is on fire right now and I think the new music has really energized things. I will say, as a bit of a setlist geek, that we still got 45 total songs over the three days. Not bad at all. Yep, the new songs are in strong rotation and I'm sure that will continue. Would always love more deep cuts too, but as folks have said here, the new stuff seems to be integrating nicely. Kudos to the band and organization for another quality weekend. Wish I could go to them all! Jack

Loving the record on first impression. And, to each his own, but for me, “Blackout Sam” may end up being a top 10 THS track for me.
The sequencing works well for me overall. I agree that “Confusion” isn’t a typical THS closer (so wish they closed with Blackout.). But the album is a fun and fresh listen. So excited for this weekend’s shows.

Thought it was worth mentioning that the Rolling Stones are playing the night before the festivities start in Seattle. Unfortunately, we can't make it, but maybe a THS lyric will come true?
"So, Hold Steady at the Comfort Inn Mick Jagger's at the Mandarin."
(But, I hope the guys are at a nicer hotel.)

Does anyone know who did the album/cover art? Looks like Chris Ware. However, there have been a handful of artists in-the-style-of lately. I may die and come back if it's Chris Ware. I really think that's Chris Ware. XO WD According to Bandcamp: Artwork by Nick Hollomon

They should record a Moshpit Josh version on a seven inch, and sell it at live shows. Bound to get one soon in the Bootleg Series.
