Put Records & Tapes in for Wait a While and the vinyl sequencing that includes Saddle Shoes should be what they start with.

It is one ticket, and it will work at all three nights.

Interesting nerd observation; think this is the first HS album where Franz’s songwriting contributions outstrip Tad’s - four Finn/Nicolay songs, three Finn/Kubler tracks and one Finn/Kubler/Nicolay co-write (plus one Finn and one Finn/Selvidge). It definitely is. It's such a manifestation of what they (and especially Tad) have been talking a lot about lately: How the band have turned into a way more democratic artistic collective, and that they no longer compete for space. It seems like they've treated songs as songs this time around, and just chose the ones who worked out the best, and fit the album the most. I think it's mostly this. Tad is older, wiser, and perhaps able to let others' contributions in more freely now that the band's really just doing this because they enjoy each other, the scene, and what they're doing. There's less pressure on the whole operation. A small elephant in the room is that as bands get older, tempos slow down and things get a little quieter. I see it with Drive-By Truckers, too. And one could also presume that maybe Tad only had so many big, wide-screen Hold Steady riffs in his bag and finds them harder to come by now that most of his time in a given year is spent on other projects.

I'll post here as it seems the most relevant. There are clearly nearly enough new songs debuted this year, included at the Brooklyn Bowl shows, that a new album can't be far off. London saw Sideways Skull and Llama played, summer dates featured Carlos is Crying, BB has has Sixers and Grand Junction. Feels like ODP had a similar number debuted before its release. Fingers crossed for next year......... I feel like the week after Brooklyn Bowl, with spirits high, would be a good time to announce a new record and a big slate of 2023 THS stuff.

I saw the announcement that the band is playing Chicago with Mountain Goats and Dillinger Four on 7/1/23.
I hope they lay out the full itinerary for how they're celebrating twenty soon so people can decide what they can make it to.

If this is the merch ISO thread, I've wanted a new THE HOLD STEADY ALMOST KILLED ME text shirt since the armpits rotted out of my last one. Size L if it's around.

I am, of course, going to let it sink in as I would anything from my favorite songwriter, but first impression says that I like the first half more than the second and that it's my least favorite of his solo records.

Did they play any new songs at soundcheck? March in London had a couple (Llama and Bloodbath) both at check and at the last show.

Mine are below. I like this record in tiers, it seems like. While I think it's a very good work, I don't think it has the signature THS opener or closer that their classic-period records had. The top tier, IMO, stands with anything and I hope are regulars in the set for years to come.
1. Unpleasant Breakfast 2. Spices 3. Heavy Covenant 4. Family Farm 5. Lanyards --------------------
6. The Feelers 7. Parade Days 8. The Prior Procedure 9. Me & Magdalena 10. Hanover Camera 11. Riptown

I'm just going with my favorite songs right now, with a little bias against some stuff that I've seen every time or almost.
This would look different if you asked me again in 10 minutes.
1. Constructive Summer 2. Stuck Between Stations 3. Your Little Hoodrat Friend 4. Esther 5. Hornets! Hornets! 6. Spices 7. Both Crosses 8. Unpleasant Breakfast 9. Barfruit Blues 10. Entitlement Crew 11. The Swish 12. Lanyards 13. Spinners 14. Cheyenne Sunrise 15. Atlantic City 16. Star 18 17. Our Whole Lives 18. Slapped Actress ------------ 19. Ask Her for Adderall 20. The Sweet Part of the City 21. Sequestered in Memphis 22. The Last Thing That I Ever Wanted Was to Show Up and Blow Your Mind

#49: HOT FRIESI came late to the party (pun partially intended) on this one, and I think that’s part of the reason it still sounds fresh to me. It’s one of the rockiest songs in the entire catalog, all fuzz and no afterthought. And it’s one of the songs in the catalog closest to Lifter Puller, in my opinion. A counterpart to Secret Santa Cruz.
I’m not sure if I would call it “simple”, but it’s very straight forward, still carefully constructed in the way that it keeps building energy and intensity. The chourses feels like such a release, even if they just bang along in the same style as the verses. The Big Moment for me is when they turn the screw another turn when they kick off the final part, the “It’s my party and I’ll die if I want to” - which is also a contender for the most Hold Steady-esqe line of all Hold Steady lines.
I would live to hear this live, I think it would be such a blast. And I keep putting it on playlists, intended to show what Hold Steady is all about. Final points: - There's plenty of references to getting "fried" in the Hold Steady lyrics, but if I remember right, there's not many mention of "fries" at such? This also feels like a callback to Lifter Puller, with the "we loaded up on the curly fries" line - At Massive Nights 2017 they sold a really cool grey shirt with an Andy Capp and Hot Friest theme. I use it pretty frequently First off, I'm really enjoying reading this even when I don't agree with it. Case in point, I realized the other day when this played that it's my least favorite Hold Steady song. Like I don't like it / would never want to hear it at a show, even though it's rare / don't think it's good.

When Heavy Covenant dropped as a single, I said I'd be happy if it was like, my seventh-favorite song on the record.
It's now been stuck in my head for the better part of a week. Grower for sure.

I think Craig's delivery -- a little more sing-speaky -- will make Prior Procedure a hit with the heads.

It was my favorite of the new tunes from Massive Nights, but I think I like the studio version of Family Farm more. The weird, bendy guitars were more prominent live -- as they tend to be, I guess.

I really enjoyed both parts, as Craig and Tad were both very open. Craig talked a lot, and Tad spoke, uh, less, although I get the sense they both prefer it that way. i thought about that too and came to the same conclusion.

Craig and Tad joined Bandbox's Fan Talks pod to discuss the entire history of the band, going from Lifter Puller to ODP. It's roughly two hours split over two eps. I've listened to the first, and while there isn't anything a devoted fan of the band won't know, it's still fun to hear them tell the stories again. bandboxrocks.com/blogs/bandbox-podcast-network

anyone else daydreaming about how we'll have a whole new THS album in 1 month and 2 weeks and it kinda maybe feels like it's gonna be the best one since SP aaaah yuuup. keep hoping for another single. though part of me, especially after having half of Thrashing in advance, wants as much of it as possible to be new on release day.

Great work on piecing together Spices. I only listened through one time, and figured I might leave it to native english speaking people to finish it ut, and this looks good. With Heavy Covenant here as well, I must say I really, really like these new lyrics. They seem more generic and vague in some sense, than most of the songs from Thrashing. Many of them seems to take place within a confined room, elaborating on a meeting or a situtation, rather than spanning widely over place and time. On Thrashing there was the reference heavy space travel in Denver Haircut, the trip to the Zoo and all those Hemingway/Mick Jagger/Peter Tosh stuff in Star 18, T-shirt Tux had Stalin, Johnny Cash and some pretty detailed description of characters and so on. These songs seem to be very in the moment, zooming in on something important, rather than sketch out an entire scene or timespan. It might be a generalization, but that's how I feel after hearing/reading 4/11 songs. Also interesting with two new lyrics set in what seems like relatively modern day. The ringtone from Family Farm and airplane mode of Heavy Covenant. But then again, both features was a think allready in the early 00s, so it might not mean anything. I just get a feeling that he's picking up on a (in a narrow sense) theme from The Smidge and Traditional Village, concering modernity. In The Smidge they "lie to each other, but we do it through computers". This could also be in the mid to late 90s, but it's a more dateable reference than many others in the THS universe. And in Traditional Village we get "click on the icon and drag to the cart", which I at least think we need to move a little bit in to the 00s to be able to do. Craig did say that this is the "power, wealth, and mental health" album, which suggests a lot of meetings and specific situations.

Also this is possibly peak hold steady. Remember there was a time without steve? And franz was gone? And now look at them, and the new stuff is so good, and christ I thought it might all be over and now its better than ever! So much joy the frontman himself seems pretty sure it's peak Hold Steady. What a time this weekend was. Made me miss the real deal even more while still feeling the right feelings.

the HiW songs were a real treat in soundcheck.
I'm glad Craig agrees that Our Whole Loves should be a classic THS song.
