SMJ commanded that I come here. I'm not always the most obedient soul, but... "to welsh" - 1. To swindle (a person) out of money laid as a bet; 2. To fail to carry out one's promise to (a person); to fail to keep (an obligation). (1) first used in the 19th century. "welsher": A bookmaker at a race-meeting, who takes money for a bet, and absconds or refuses to pay if he loses. The origins, according to the OED, are obscure. So the following is my own attempt at an explanation, and thus should not necessarily be taken as reliable. The English have long had a relationship of mutual distrust with the Welsh. Indeed, in Middle English, the word "Welsh" means both the nationality, but also "foreign, strange, alien". This got me to thinking about the characteristics that the English associated with the Welsh, which took me to the interesting name for the cuckoo - "Welsh ambassador". Middleton uses this description. Cuckoos, given their natural behaviour, have long been associated with deceit. This is not to say at all that "Welsher" is connected to "cuckoo", but rather than deceitful behaviour was seen by the English as a characteristic of the Welsh. Can we accurately distill that down to "essbee wins"?

Pretty much. However, I'd say it's far removed from its origins nowadays, so I doubt anyone would tend to assume it has racist overtones these days. One could always use the variant spelling, however. Say, who wants to know the etymological background of "wank"? The OED has this useful note: "This word and its derivatives are not in polite use." XD Unfortunately, no one seems to know the etymological origins of this word, and it doesn't seem to have been used before the 1940s. If anyone manages to dig anything up, that would be great... It's an odd term for masturbation, but yet also somehow perfect. (Even masturbation, meanwhile, has a disputed etymology. The most widely accepted derivation is L. "manus" (hand) + "stupramacare" (to defile). This is a seventeenth century term; I have come across medieval references to masturbation, and indeed have a vague idea for something I might write on it some day, but the terms are a bit different...)

I totally killed this thread by bringing in the language stuffs. *tear* I'm sorry, people! If I include a picture can the surrealism come back? That Magritte really creeps me out for some reason... Though not as much as the man reflected in the mirror, but the reflection is of the back of his head...

I thought that I had killed it by insisting that I was right.
Wait! What am I saying? If I killed things by being right, we'd all be six feet under.

(anna falchi. hubba. see below.) seriously, you'd fucking love it.

I haven't seen it! I shall check it out. Somehow. Hm, perhaps when I have a bit more cash I'll rejoin Lovefilm. Always a good way to get to see more unusual films as well as the blockbusters.
That's quite a foxy lady. I'm trying to work out if her lips are fake.

The '59 Sound is a great album And while the lyrical influence is definitely Springsteen the sound is more Flogging Molly. It was produced by Ted Hutt (original guitarist for Flogging Molly).
