If you've always had everything you've needed, what the hell is punk rock saying to you? Your parents suck becuase they bought you a blue bmw instead of the red porsche for your sweet 16? Steak for dinner, again? Damn it. Why does it always have to be so warm in our house during winter? In other words, you don't know from angry. XO WD Everything you've every "needed" and "wanted" are two very different things. I got everything I "needed" from my upbringing. I've seen kids with the wealthiest backgrounds, grasp punk rock and disassociate themselves from their background, for various reasons and start bands. I've seen real stupid, "poor" kids think punk rock is about spikes and bondage belts and not understand the lyric "Stab our backs when you thrash our halls, trash a bank if you got real balls." I dunno, I didn't listen to alot of "woe is me, I'm poor" punk rock. The punk rock I listened to was fast, simple and usually about girls, cops and drinking. All of which I never cared if the person singing it was raised in the suburbs and was well off. As long as the music was good.

Errrrr - Rich + Rock the Casbah - not when it came out. Now, after the fucking up of music (and music culture) courtesy of Nirvana (see above), sure. XO WD I think, unless I am mistaken that gushingblood's point was Joe Strummer was brought up by a rich family, his Dad was a diplomat and Joe went to a very expensive school. Totally agree with WD on Nirvana and her rich kids theory

I think it's funny how most of us have thought of or got this tatoo. The second I saw the album artwork, I thought it would be the perfect tattoo and I would love it. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't even have a piercing.

That's a pretty narrow-minded view. And isn't music all about freedom. Just because someone has a wealthy upbringing shouldn't limit what music they are allowed to play, because music is about emotion. And emotion is not restricted to class. XO WD Just because you were raised well doesn't mean you're life is fuckng perfect.

I just have to say a couple of things. 1. many peoples idea of 'poor" is another persons idea of rich. I am guessing that if you live in the United States you have a real jaded idea of what poor is. I have been "poor", but to me that was just a shortterm designation. We are finding out now that 'rich' can be the same way. You can be real wealthy and still know what its like to be poor in spirit. 2. I was 17 in 1976 and went to school down the block from what is now Bowery Electric. i would bet half the "kids at the shows" back then were poseurs, just like today. I saw guys I knew change just to be part of the scene and get laid. literally change out of their school clothes into Doc's and ripped jeans and put safety pins in their ears where they had gold studs during the day. I got thrown out of CBGB's one night for spitting on the band. Thrown out of CBGB's. I didnt think it was possible.
What am I trying to say? Everyone has their own movement. Their own little drummer, sometimes folks just follow the same one. You just cant cast a broad net over anything because there's always a fucking porpoise in there somewhere. Damn, I got lost somewhere. i know what i wanted to say, but i am not sure I said it. Fuck it. i should get a tattoo. I mean everyone else has.

For my next tattoo I'm gonna get a white guy with a mohawk playing the blues while sitting in the back of a BMW... It's gonna blow some minds. Awesome. I've been reading this discussion and I've had several thoughts, which is incredible. Music is about expression. Artists want to express themselves. Some do it better than others, according to popularity or understanding. Music is about feeling. Fanatics love music for many reasons. I'm certain we've all liked something at some point just be liked. The post about the person at college with all the punk friends that didn't dress like them; cool. I don't think you need to be exactly like everyone else to be special, but you don't have to be unlike everyone else too. To each his/her own. I love the SP logo just for it's meaning. How much better would we all be if we truly lived it?

No. XO WD Edited to say: It's like white guys playing blues. Dave Bromberg....Roy Buchannan...Duane Allman...stop me anytime. Stop. That's more southern rock.... But going to WD's point about scene appropriation (which I also lived through and understand, don't forget, it made Cobain as angry as it made us) the side point about a white person not really translating a blues song in their soul isn't really correct. I'm a huge blues fan, but blues weren't (as we know them) a pure distillation of black folk music. It was black folk music meeting white folk music and translated through what the white recorders and audiences wanted to hear based on their own needs and preconceptions. Leadbelly sang pop standards, but that's not what people wanted. The black musicians made a good living traveling to play to largely white folk, because white folk wanted their romantic image of what the black folk would sing about. Self fulfilling prophecy - black singers delivering that were the ones field recorded or studio recorded or successful on tour. Not to deny the considerable talent, but just taking an overview of 1900 - 1940 you can see the form get shaped and distilled into what was going to be 'blues music' in the white world. (It's really still with us and shaped early rap music.) Also yea, lotsa rich kids in punk. It spoke to us deeply and strongly, but it didn't start about us. I'd argue The Who started pop punk, me, but The Clash brought the talent the Pistols lacked, and the Ramones sealed the deal. We were off and running. edited to add - not to bring the class warfare, but there is a rage from being poor in America that I really think it would be hard to explain to the not-poor in America. 911 is a joke in your town has real bloody meaning in our lives, not abstract anger, but the anger of stupid, stupid loss.

Dave Bromberg....Roy Buchanan...Duane Allman...stop me anytime. Stop. That's more southern rock.... Bromberg southern rock??? South fucking Philly maybe. This is a guy who started off playing with The Reverend Gary Davis. Maybe youre mistaking bluegrass for Southern rock. Try listening to Wanted Dead or Alive or How Late'll Ya Play Till. Buchanan? I cant even THINK of one song that would be considered southern rock. Buchanan began his career on Chess Records. You cant get much more blues than that. .You must be thinking of someone else. Try listening to Live Stock or Thats What I Am Here For.
