When did the idea of body ink become so mainstream? It was almost like an overnight sensation but I cannot pinpoint the year. One day it was Hells Angels and Sailors, the next it was Missy from Kappa Kappa Psi. When did this all happen? I am sorta jealous. I'd like to get the SP on my shoulder but I am starting to get those gray hairs that grow straight up, or peek out from under my white Hanes tanktop. It just wouldnt look so cool I dont think. I was also gona go for one on my hip but pretty soon I have to go under the knife for a hip replacement, and i wouldnt want the symbol to get split up. Mother fucking fucking fucking fucking Nirvana. FUCK. Don't fucking get me started. XO WD

Ben, really? I get to do this all over again?
Nirvana in general. The fucked up music, they fucked up my entire world. They made it okay for sorority girls to get tattoos and for kids to have their rich parents buy them guitars so they could have a punk band.
Green Day is next on my list.

XO WD Well, okay, but (and I'm honestly asking this, not trying to antagonize you WD) what's so bad about sorority girls getting tattoos* and kids getting their parents to buy them guitars so they can learn to play? Keep hating on Nirvana, though. I have no problem with that. *besides the fact that everything sorority girls do is fucking annoying

So rich kids arn't allowed to make punk music? No. XO WD Edited to say: It's like white guys playing blues. That's a pretty narrow-minded view. And isn't music all about freedom. Just because someone has a wealthy upbringing shouldn't limit what music they are allowed to play, because music is about emotion. And emotion is not restricted to class.

I can understand the punk thing. But WD, blues isn't forbidden for white guys. Look at the Stones. When rich people start playng music which is aimed at them, I have no idea where I'm goin with this.

If you've always had everything you've needed, what the hell is punk rock saying to you? Your parents suck becuase they bought you a blue bmw instead of the red porsche for your sweet 16? Steak for dinner, again? Damn it. Why does it always have to be so warm in our house during winter? In other words, you don't know from angry. XO WD

People are born into wealth. It is not their fault if they have a better upbringing and they have a choice to play or listen to whatever music they want. White people are allowed to listen to NWA and Public Enemy...

People are allowed to listen to anything they want. Absolutely. Never said they weren't.
But.
Rich kids don't know punk rock.
White people don't know the blues.
I absolutely LOVE old blues. I would NEVER EVER EVER preted to understand it, feel it, get it. I can appreciate it, but I can't have it.

I can understand where you are coming from if a rich person is playing hypocritical music example lyric: "I was born with nothing..." But for them not being allowed to sing a total genre is ridiculous
A rich person can sing this with conviction and without any hypocrisy:
Now the king told the boogie men You have to let that raga drop The oil down the desert way Has been shakin to the top The sheik he drove his cadillac He went a cruisnin down the ville The muezzin was a standing On the radiator grille
The shareef dont like it Rockin the casbah Rock the casbah The shareef dont like it Rockin the casbah Rock the casbah
By order of the prophet We ban that boogie sound Degenerate the faithful With that crazy casbah sound But the bedouin they brought out The electric camel drum The local guitar picker Got his guitar picking thumb As soon as the shareef Had cleared the square They began to wail
Now over at the temple Oh! they really pack em in The in crowd say its cool To dig this chanting thing But as the wind changed direction The temple band took five The crowd caught a wiff Of that crazy casbah jive
The king called up his jet fighters He said you better earn your pay Drop your bombs between the minarets Down the casbah way
As soon as the shareef was Chauffeured outta there The jet pilots tuned to The cockpit radio blare
As soon as the shareef was Outta their hair The jet pilots wailed
He thinks its not kosher Fundamentally he cant take it. You know he really hates it."

First, I found this: mattjs Posted: Thu Jun 05, 2008 11:04 am Joined: 13 Dec 2007 Posts: 483 Location: Birmingham, UK. According to my girlfriend's Look magazine "the grunge look" is back! Oh but now its called neo-grunge!
Yes you can buy £150/$300 lumberjack shirts and £50 Sonic Youth Goo t-shirts from urban outfitters and pretend you always loved the first Mudhoney album and that were a member of the Sub-Pop singles club! _________________ US#711 Stayin' Posi! I saw a good looking girl wearing a Goo t-shirt, and I thought, wow maybe she isn't as dense as she looks and actually has an interesting music taste. Me:So I see you like Sonic Youth, fucking great band arn't they? Her:Sonic what? Second, and back to the debate. I just believe that music is about emotion, which is universal thus making it possible for anyone to write the music. A rich person can see if society is poor, and have the right to write music expressing their thoughts and feelings.

It's interesting reading this debate. My perspective is that the appropriation of genres has been happening for as long as people have been making music, or any other kind of art. Actually, I will quote from a book by Helen Cooper which is on medieval romance, but that makes a point about the circulation and adaptation of that literature over time which can be applied to other literary genres - and to music, too, I think.
"There is a word for such things now: a 'meme', an idea that behaves like a gene in its ability to replicate faithfully and abundantly, but also on occasion to adapt, mutate, and therefore survive in different forms and cultures." Helen Cooper, The English Romance in Time (Oxford, 2004), p. 3.
I understand that the cynical appropriation of musical genres can seem like a cheap way to make a buck and to take advantage of a trend. That's not great. But for a genre to stay alive, it needs to be not just maintained, but added to - and not necessarily in the same way it was when it first came into being, nor by the same socio-economic groups. Purists of any artistic genre - music, visual arts, literature - can often want that genre to be preserved in a vacuum. But in doing that, they make the genre a museum piece, something that is static, rather than dynamic. Punk, for instance, emerged as a way of thumbing one's nose at the establishment, as well as getting away from what was seen as a bombastic rock scene. But we are not in the late 1970s any more, and the things that preoccupy us have changed. So, too, has the punk scene. It's also very easy to judge people if they are materially advantaged, but privilege comes in many forms, and many of us will experience prejudices and difficulties that are not related to economics, but which can find an answering voice in punk - not an echo, for our feelings may not be the same, but a harmony.
Ok, that was long.

Yes, but when music evolves and changes, you get, uh, the Rolling Stones, who are influenced by the blues. You get Green Day who were influenced by punk rock. Neither band will ever be their influences, but each are creating something new.
Now, if Green Day and their fans will just admit that, the world would be a better place.
