my favourite is separation sunday, because it's the best one. We have to work on all that second guessing you do of yourself, it's wearing me out, it is. Have faith in yourself!

It's so fucking raw. It features some of the smartest lyrics I've ever heard and has THE greatest guitar solo of the twenty first century on it...
Oh I voted.

i have this ongoing debate with a friend of mine between "the best ____" and "my favorite ____" in my very humble opinion the best record THS have made is seperation sunday, i think it is the most complete and the most coherent as far as telling a unified story. But AKM will always be my favorite record of theirs. It was the one that got me into the band and it is the most raw representation of the band.

has THE greatest guitar solo of the twenty first century on it... I would seriously rate it as the greatest guitar solo EVER. Hendrix ain't got shit on the Koob

It's one of the most important albums of the last fifteen years. It's so good because THS actually FOLLOW UP AKM's statement with fucking intent over the next three albums/tours etc.

sometimes separation sunday, sometimes stay positive. depends on the day of the week, the hour of the day, the alignment of the stars, the way the sun strikes my eyes in the morning, and a little hocus-pocus. of course, "separation" is always spelled correctly in my analysis. Same here, but most of the time it's Separation Sunday, so I went with that.

The opening salvo of "How a Resurrection Really Feels" makes me rock out with my nether regions out, but I still vote AKM. My favorite changes every week, or thereabouts, but right now I keep wanting to go up to people and ask them to call me Freddy Knuckles.

Everyone always goes for Separation Sunday, but I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Positive Jam & Killer Parties are the alpha & the omega of the Hold Steady for me. It's messy and it lacks structure and I hate Sweet Payne, but though I love Separation, for pure unadulterated affection I gotta go with Almost Killed Me all the way. how can you hate sweet payne? good god man that song is the hold steady.

ss is my favorite record to paint to. that sounds awkward. favorite record to play while i paint? idk. whatever. its my favorite. i never feel the need to skip a track. ever. that says something. i have this disorder that i like to describe as "musical adhd". but not with ss. to me, its lovely. and that seems to be the general consensus. im okay with that.

I think the first three albums all are 10/10, white Stay Positive is a 9/10. I used to think Almost Killed Me was the weakest one, but it just keeps growing, and I might even place it at #2 today. Separation Sunday is the favourite. So consistent, probably the best album of the 00s.

I find SS a completly different album to BAGIA and AKM, probably due to the concept of it. Whilst the other two just seem like albums with a selection of songs, instead of one large driving theme/story. But in recent weeks AKM and BAGIA have been fighting it out for top spot.

i voted SS. but, i'm actually a little side about the lack of love for SP. i'm gonna listen on my way to work so that the album doesn't feel unloved.

I take the view that SS is their best album and it is also my favorite THS album. There is a battle for the no. 2 spot between AKM and SP which are behind only by a small margin. BAGIA is clearly my least favorite of theirs though.

The question is which is my favourite, and mine is BAGIA. But hell, I'm one of the new kids who loves The Hold Steady for the singalong numbers

I always agreed with (of all things!) the Billboard review of Separation Sunday, which referred to ...Almost Killed Me as something like a "critically mis-hyped debut album." The review doesn't say that it's a bad album (I don't think it is, myself), but I think captures very well my particular sentiments. A promising record, rather than a great one. For me.
