“Thrashing Thru The Passion” Denver Haircut Epaulets You Did Good Kid Traditional Village Blackout Sam Entitlement Crew T-Shirt Tux Star 18 The Stove & The Toaster Confusion In The Marketplace I love the album title but even if the as-yet-unheard tunes are real bangers, this looks like an LP I'll be skipping much of side two. Most of the singles that made the album cut are my least favorite of the bunch and considering how THS is known for epic album closers, Confusion seems like an odd choice. Hoping Eureka gets a proper vinyl release at some point since it didn't make the cut. Still, any new music from THS is cause for excitement. If I was to rate the nine (released) new ones, the five album cuts would be 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8 for me. But I agree on the lack of a real closer. I would actually prefer T-Shirt Tux as the last song. At least the ending of that has an epic and emotional feel to it.

I don't necessarily dislike any of them but with the exception of Entitlement, most of them sound like they belong on a B-side collection to me. That's far from an insult; THS B-sides are better than what most bands can churn out on their best days but most of them don't strike me as essential album tracks. And while Tux is one of my least favorites (it's got a killer riff but just doesn't do much for me once it gets going) I'd agree it'd surely be the best closer of the bunch.

Oh man, I have to disagree. I'd maybe swap T Shirt Tux out for Eureka or Snake In The Shower, but otherwise I think they're good picks. The cool thing is that we have all the songs so we can swap them out if we really want to. I'd love a brand new track for the closer but I think Marketplace is a decent finish. I do wish the new and familiar songs were mixed up though.
I am so hyped for Denver Haircut as an opener, the live version I've heard absolutely rips!

The live version of Denver Haircut is awesome, I can't wait for that one either. It's mostly just Tux and Confusion that are putting me off. Again, Tux is okay, but sounds more like a B-side to me. And I just don't see Confusion on par with KP, Resurrection, Southtown, Actress, Discomfort and Oaks. Even though I don't love all of those tunes, they feel like proper, almost epic closures for each record. I listened to Confusion again this morning and I just don't hear it, though maybe that's because I haven't heard the album in full. I'm with Doc; of all the newer songs, Snake sounds like the most natural closer to me.

Confusion I think makes sense in thinking about the way THS play shows, release new music, etc.
When Craig keeps hammering home about “confusion in the marketplace”.
These are way different times now; than the way bands used to make & release music; as well as tour.
Also, that song hits on a lot of great character themes of classic THS as well as ending and landing on the powerful line “ I don't wanna dick around. I just wanna devastate.”
In thinking about it as a closer. I think it speaks to real life people / characters / and the band breaking the 4th wall subtly in this one.
I’m super cool with it closing out the record if it ended up that tracking.

I’m hoping that previous album release are going to be an indicator of there being editions of the new album that include bonus tracks (I.e the previously released tracks). Separation and HIW are the only two albums that didn’t have bonus track options...

I can't quite remember, but I seem to reckon I had them on (legal) digital format.

As it being a comment on the band's place in the world of music anno 2019, sort of? I really like the lyrics, and the way Craig sings the song. It's a little bit flat and static, but I get the sense that this is deliberate. Every line fills out the music perfectly, and it's sooo full of metaphors, alliterations and cross-references. I hear it almost as a genre study, and it sounds very carefully written, lyrics wise. Also, and re: that 4th wall thing: Doesn't the small guitar break somwhere in the middle of the song sound very much like Lord I'm Discouraged? In that Stay Positive podcast series, members of the band go a long way to describe that song as an autobiographical take from Craig. Tad says it like it's a given fact.

Also, there is usually always a nugget of truth or something that actually took place or has basis‘ in a lot of Craig’s songs.

If memory serves, Ascension Blues was a b-side to the ‘Hurricane J’ 7” that was released as a pre-order bundle and Touchless was an iTunes preorder bonus. I can’t remember if Ascension was also an iTunes bonus.

I kinda remember getting a download for “ascension blues” in my email. I think they sent it out to folks that preordered the album with the bonus 7”.

I might have gotten it illegally, but I remember having both on my iPod, and I don't think i preordered the 7". Got it later, though. I kind of dig Touchless. It's very much a b-side, but it's a good one. And I love how Tad so shamelessly stole the riff from Oasis. Remember that Separate Vacations and Goin' On A Hike (were there others?) also came from these sessions. I wonder if there exist studio recording of those. They were among the earliest new tracks to be played live, at the same time Our Whole Lives and We Can Get Togheter started to pop up in the setlists. I doesn't have to mean anything, but you would think that they recorded them, since the songs was finished enough to be played at shows. Are there any other examples of songs being played live who's not been released in some way? Midnight Hauler was one of them, but we've heard the studio version of that one by now. Gideon's Conversion might be another, but I don't think I've ever heard it, and it might be a later released track with another name. While we're at it: I wonder if Heaven Is Whenever is up for a reissue with bonus tracks and all. It should be due next year, but Craig and the rest of the band seem to disregard the album a bit in hindsight. They were pretty clear about it on These Miracles Work podcasts that Stay Positive was the last album they really felt good with. So it made sense that it was given the anniversiary treatment, being played in full at shows and all that. I still think Heaven Is Whenever, though not as good as the first four, would deserve some attention. It wasn't a perfect album, but there's a whole bunch of really great tracks on it.

Touchless & Ascension Blues were released digitally as iTunes exclusive bonus tracks when that album was released

I was really tempted to ask Craig about this at the DC show over the weekend, but figured they'll tell us all when they're good and ready.

I’d really love a deluxe edition of HiW. I love that record and go back to it fairly often. I thought I remembered reading around the time it came out that Franz had tracked some keys but they cut them from the LP when he left. It’d be cool to hear a reimagined version.

Yes! Vinyl looks delightful.
A real nice touch to offer 50% on Bandcamp if you've already bought the songs.
Edit: Got so excited about the album I forgot to acknowledge what a fun track Denver Haircut is right from the first listen.

New album!!! So excited.
When I first saw the track list, I too was a little bummed, but then I listened to them in order and really liked the flow. T-Shirt Tux is better than I remember. Do wish Esther was on there as a closer, though. But still, really happy! Didn't think we'd ever get another new album after Teeth Dreams, especially full of Franz and horns.

I wish Esther was on there too, I'd say in these last couple of years of releasing songs here and there Esther was the best song of the current batch. I like it a little bit more the Entitlement Crew, which I like a lot also. First impression is that it's an out takes record. Better than nothing though.

I made my own outtakes album, full of everything that wasn't on albums proper. It's a long list. Didn't include any of the new stuff on it, though, so this works out for me. We'll see how it all flows when it comes out. I never thought HiW flowed well and it suffered because of it.

I think "T-shirt" could have also been a nice closer on this record as well, especially with the songs tonal shift & message at the end of the song...
