Could have been me. My t-shirt was off-white. Might have looked yellow in that weird red light. I stood in second row, just about in the middle of the balcony and think I screamed out every single lyric. Off-white?? Your t-shirt was completely off towards the end! You were marvellously drunk, though. You crazy football fans! Wonderful to be alongside you Jonas. I completely agree with everything you said here Del. Us football fans can be a little crazy, Jonas was definitely topless by the end of the night and it was super cool to finally catch up with Jonas as well as yourself, Stringer and other names I’m forgetting. What a weekend! Same time next year?

Haha. This is all true. My shirt went off. I was probably more drunk than I've been for years. But I sort of feel like it was the right thing to do.
And, yes. Same time next year.
Lots of love!

The Times (of London) gave Friday night's Camden show four stars out of five - on that basis Sunday at Oslo should merit at least a six...
Review: The Hold Steady at the Electric Ballroom, NW1
On the first of three nights in London the Brooklynite band were as life-affirming as we have come to expect and the energy surged from the start

★★★★☆
In recent years the Hold Steady have done away with tours in favour of residencies in individual cities, drawing on the pockets of fanatical support that have built up around the world for their euphoric shoutiness. This was the first of a three-night run in London by the Brooklynites, named The Weekender after one of their bittersweet songs. And it was as life-affirming as we have come to expect, a four-guitar assault of testosterone and emotion.
Balding and bespectacled, their leader Craig Finn may look like a lecturer from a red-brick university, but he’s a born frontman and a vivid storyteller, half-singing and half-reciting his tales of oblivion and redemption while firing off salvos from his rhythm guitar. The energy surged from the start. “I’ve been looking forward to this for ever,” Finn roared before the jagged teenage nostalgia of Stevie Nix. The volcanic reaction from the crowd suggested they felt the same.
The Hold Steady draw on influences as diverse as the melodic fuzz of post-punk and the seamy vignettes of hip-hop; Sequestered in Memphis had traces of the Jam’s That’s Entertainment. If they have a signature sound, however, it’s Finn’s wisecracking flow, rippling over piano-led heartland rock — the gorgeous Party Pit felt like Paul Simon fronting the E Street Band.
An observant Catholic, Finn lamented the arrival of Lent, wondering if he could be granted an exemption from abstention. Not that stimulants were required. Stay Positive was a climactic call to arms during which a gentleman named Mosh Pit Josh emerged from, yes, the mosh pit to perform a ranting interlude.
Then the crowd joined Finn in bellowing the Hold Steady credo: “There is so much joy in what we do up here.” He says it at every show — and every time it’s true.

If there was a league table for the amount of beers any one single person has ever bought me you've won it every season since 2007! x Great to meet so many people - full thoughts a little later, straight back at it at work catching up this week!

Thanks for linking that review, I've forwarded it to a few friends who couldn't make it to London. Best review I've read yet. Well said about the community at large too. From Band to crew to fans & friends old and new everyone should be proud of the weekender, great times! I was sad it ended but now I'm happy it happened.Massive nights #4 seems so far away but looking forward to it already.

I'm very likely to go to Brooklyn this year. I'm trying to peer pressure Stringer into it as well.

I'm very likely to go to Brooklyn this year. I've started planning this too. It appears my wife has friends visiting Brooklyn around the same time so if the planets align.... Meanwhile crashing lows from post Weekender blues. But what a weekend!

Jonas was definitely topless by the end of the night If they say I partied... It's taken me a week to recover, but another great night in Camden 9/3/19. Due to a recently injured shoulder, I decided to play safe and watch from the balcony (a first for me) in the great company of tBob and his mate Craig, as well as the wonderfully exuberant Jonas (Muzzle) and his Nordic companions. Brilliant set-list, with Chips, Hoodrat, DJs and Killer Parties highlights for me. Discouraged was so emotional. By the time of the encore, I couldn't hold back any more and had to join the youngsters - Stringer, Tom (The River) and Eric - for a good leap and bounce around. Damm right we danced! After the show, it was great to also catch up again with so many friendly friends - Jonny (Bigontheinside) Howard (still the world's most generous man - that's the biggest round I've ever seen bought), Nosferatu, Alane - and to briefly meet Franz and Selvidge! Yet again, great music, great friends, so much joy. What a massive night! It'll take me about a year to stop aching - then let's do it all again!

I'm very likely to go to Brooklyn this year. Jane & I are seriously thinking it about it this year, we've never had the remotest interest in visiting the USA but sure we can make an exception.
