Also, can I suggest some much nicer preshow pubs than the bloody Oxford Arms to you all, albeit a little further afield. I recommend Tapping the Admiral, 77 Castle Road NW1 8SU. Five mins from the Electric Ballroom on a backstreet, but a lovely pub with a great range of beers. The Lady Hamilton, on Kentish Town Road (in Kentish Town itself) is 10 mins walk and run by the same people who run Tapping the Admiral. The Grafton Arms on Prince of Wales Road is decent pub. All three are miles better than the ones right by the Electric. Thank you. Sold on Tapping The Admiral, did a quick image search and it ticks several boxes already... Period Victorian interior? Check. Back street corner boozer? Check. Burning Sky on cask? Check. I'll stop being an ale bore now. I'll be in there once I land in Camden off the rattler on Friday night if anyone's around...

Shame these gigs aren't on pie-and-a-pint for a tenner nights.

The Black Heart was horribly dark (clue's in the title, I suppose) and very loud (some of us are middle-aged). It might be nice to meet up somewhere where we could say hello properly and have a natter pre-gig? Any of the above sound good - maybe whichever's easiest for everyone to get to? By all means! I just threw it in as an option really close to the venue. I hope I have time to meet up with you guys on Friday. I think my plane lands at about 2:30pm. Saturday is also an opportunity, but I would like to catch that Leyton Orient match too.

I like the idea of Tapping the Admiral too - could be a Xmas parlour game of course.
Though I note that it closes at midnight on a Friday and Saturday.
Certainly up for it pre-show.

Bought tickets yesterday. I haven't been to a match in England since 2001, I believe. And I've only been to grounds like Maine Road, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford, so a smaller, classic english venue will be great! More like some stadiums I've visited across Europe the past few years (Go Ahead Eagles, Mechelen, Vaduz).

Can't believe you're not all going to QPR v Stoke on the Saturday.

Can't believe you're not all going to QPR v Stoke on the Saturday. I considered it, but the early kick off tipped me in the direction of Leyton Orient. And it's within walking distance of my hotel in Hackney. Next time around, I'd like to go to Loftus Road too.

Can't believe you're not all going to QPR v Stoke on the Saturday. £25.00... it's got a chance. Haven't seen a Steve Mcclaren side since watching Boro in the early 00s, is he still making completely unfathomable substitutions? In a related note, possibly asking a lot, but has anyone got any recommendations for somewhere half decent near Hackney Picturehouse to watch Arsenal v United on Sunday (KO 16:30)?

Sadly, I will not now be going to the QPR v Stoke game, because I'll be hosting the soundcheck Q&A. If anyone has questions they want asking, let me know …

Seetickets lists a band called crewel intentions as the support on Friday. Never heard of them myself, though I'm familiar with the singer's previous band, palma violets, who were pretty good.
Not sure if it's just one support band like last time or more to come. I thought it would be acts that the hold steady knew/had history with?

Crewel Intentions are good live. The couple of things they've released sound very Nick Caveish, but live there's more of a Gun Club vibe about them. Chilli, the singer, is awfully charismatic.

Traveling from Amsterdam for this - first time seeing the Hold Steady as they never set foot in my country before! I have a friday ticket and am looking for a saturday one if someone has a spare. Plus, nobody I know loves them enough to fly to London to see them, so it would be great to share an ale or two with some of you folks.

I flew in from Copenhagen to be there. And as someone who's been alone to several Hold Steady shows abroad: Just show up at the designated bar (looks like consensus is on Tapping The Admiral) and look for some relevant t-shirts. I'm pretty sure you will recieve a warm welcome.

Friday's show is so early that I don't know if I can make it to the pub, but I'll try to. I love early shows but this is going to be a logistical nightmare for me as there's a chance I'll have to go straight from the airport. People who went last year: does anyone know what's the Electric Ballroom policy for backpacks? Is there a proper cloakroom in the venue?

There is a proper cloakroom, you should be fine with a backpack although they'll probably make you remove any liquids you've got before entering the venue

Just checked out Pkew Pkew Pkew who I'd never heard before- they sound great and I'm really looking forward to seeing them. Crewel Intentions are probably not quite my thing but they might be more appealing live- as the post above says, Nick Cave comes to mind.
