Has there been ANY talk about a vinyl re-issue? It nears 200 now for a new copy. Sure would love to get it, especially if it had Adderall (not to mention the other bonus tracks). Haven't heard anything about it. Would have been a quite obvious candidate for last Record Store Day. I've understood that these things are often quite complex deals between bands, labels and rights to this and that. But a re-issue would be nice. I'm still curious on wheter there's an recorded version of songs like Ballad Of The Midnight Hauler (when was that one first played live?), Separate Vacations and Going On A Hike (those two is surely from around Heaven Is Whenever). Would be nice to see some of them included. Or a surprise out of nowhere, like The Most Important Thing from the re-issue of Separation Sunday. Can confirm that Ballad of Midnight Hauler was recorded in studio via Franz in a Q&A on Twitter he did last year. That was the one question I asked and he just responded "Yes, it was."

Holy shit, Tad dated Neko Case?! That was what I thought! I saw Neko Case play before Hold Steady at End Of The Road in 2009, and Neko caught most of the THS show from the side of the stage. Would love to know when this was a thing. Great read, by the way.

Yeah, the article could've really done with a better editor. Beyond the 'nearly killed me thing'...
I think Tad's celebrity look-a-like is Alan Tudyk, not Stephen Merchant.
It uses the line about Tad playing base for LP as 'taking a bullet for the team' twice.
Also, a bunch of Craig's answers are unfortunately cut off. Too bad.

Also came across a sealed copy of the sequestered 7" with the sp logo transfer intact. Dunno how much they go for

1. Separation Sunday 2. Boys & Girls in America 3. Almost Killed Me 4. Stay Positive 5. Heaven is Whenever 6. Teeth Dreams Wow, I think this is the first list similar to mine. Or at least, similar to what could have been my list. BAGIA/AKM for 2nd/3rd and HIW/SP for 4th/5th is always a coin toss.

They are in the works right now with the deluxe re-issue of SP, should be awesome. Hoping for some unreleased stuff, perhaps "Going on a Hike".

I think that one is likely to be from the Heaven Is Whenever sessions. I wonder if we'll ever get a reissue of HiW, seems unlikely given that so many people see it as such a step down. It would be a real shame if Going On A Hike and Separate Vacations never see the light of day. I've heard Tad say that looking back he can't believe some of the mixing decisions he made for HiW, so it would be really cool if the whole album could be remixed and remastered. Doubt that'll happen though.

I think it's a general trend in Hold Steady records getting a bit too packed. It started on Boys And Girls. I love that record, but there's just a little bit too much stacked onto each song. I get a feeling that's why the mix doesn't sound all that good either. Stay Positive is in some ways cleaner, but there's still that combination of lots of guitars and added instruments on the top of it. Heaven Is Whenever has that slick and shiny production, who makes it both a bit lound and a bit bland. And Teeth Dreams is just a tad too noisy for me. The guitars aren't any heavier than those on Separation Sunday, but they're far too many and they don't always work that well together.
I think Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday are the easiest and most pleasant Hold Steady records, sound- and production wise. They are way cleaner, clearer and breathes in a way the last four records don't.
That being said, I really, really love Boys And Girls, and I think all of the last three albums are great as hell. But I guess this is a part of the reason why they sound so much more fresh and alive when playing live compared to the studio versions of the songs.

But I guess this is a part of the reason why they sound so much more fresh and alive when playing live compared to the studio versions of the songs. Couldn’t agree more. It’s like they shoehorned elements into the sound way too quickly after Sep Sun. It’s only now with breathing space and time to reflect we get what I consider to be the perfect Hold Steady balance in the brand new material. You can hear Tad, Craig, Steve, Franz, Galen and Bobby working to give the mix engineer an easier time... so much so that the new stuff doesn’t just sound like someone’s copy and pasted the idea of horns from some classic rock LP from the 70s onto their tunes, it sounds like there’s room for it. I really think the latest stuff is the most technically and musically cohesive stuff they’ve come up with since AKM/SS. You can show off all of the rock trinkets/moves as much as you like on BaGiA thru Teeth Dreams but nothing beats the restrained AKMesque cohesion on the new material for me. Also, in terms of the lineage - I think of Heaven Is Whenever as THS’s “Be Here Now” - the one after the relatively perfect record that is Stay Positive (I mean perfect in terms of the small ‘c’ classic rock sound they were going for around this time, not in terms of the overall repertoire). There’s too much compression on HiW, it’s too insular, it’s very anxious sounding. Even now I struggle to listen to it without feeling on edge. Teeth Dreams has the sonic benefit of a band rediscovering themselves... the latest stuff sounds, well, like everyone knows their role (in a good way!). On a seperate note, I listened to Stay Positive on vinyl tonight and the press is absolutely shocking - I’ve got OPEC crisis era pressings of loads of 70s stuff that manage to gain livelier than this. The sonic balance is there but there’s just no response under the needle. I also watched some live THS from Later With Jools... and compared with some THS from now, and they are undeniably a much better live band now than they ever were then - which sounds mad because all the press and impetus in the UK around then was about how good they were live (and they were and are in different ways now), but now they’re SO much better in my opinion, and still just as exciting.

Pretty sure Hauler should have three asterisks and Spectres should have two. So excited for three new studio tracks; a SP-era vault-cleaning has been my biggest THS wish for years.

Oh baby. I hope these are full studio recordings and not demos, but either way this is amazing. 2 songs we've never heard of plus, finally, a studio version of Midnight Hauler. Amazing

This website isn't working for me Is there are a tracklisting? I can't get in either. I seem to recall there was a similar problem when one of the other reissues was released on Bull And Moose. Maybe there's something with access from overseas IP-adresses.

this is very cool but why did they fuck with the initial vinyl sequence? it works so well. having a bonus track at the end of side D instead of ending the side with "slapped actress" is a bummer.
