Anyone got this Separation Sunday-era track on the reissue? You can buy the track on it's own on iTunes. Not THS at their best, definitely feels like a demo, but damn does it feel good to get some new old-Hold Steady.

First verse lyrics: Yeah, and when the band played 'Sally Cinnamon' It felt like 1991 again. Is this a Stone Roses reference? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Cinnamonwww.youtube.com/watch?v=WyfRRYlEn68I discussed The Stone Roes with Craig last year as part of the three drinks PledgeMusic deal he did. He asked me what my all time favorite band was and I replied that it was The Stone Roses. I don't recall his exact response but he did praise them. 'The Most Important Thing' is a bit demo-y in feel, but it also has that Sep Sunday vibe that I dig. The SR reference only sweetens it for me.

Just heard the first of the podcasts on the reissues, and Craig also points out that Killer Parties had a sort of Manchester feel.

I also see some lyrical similarities with the Stone Roses religious references ("I Am the Resurrection" being the most obvious).

I kind of dig this! It's not like it would have been a centerpiece of an album, or anything, but it's a pretty sweet b-side (and very b-sidey soudning, in a good way). It sounds like a sharper version of Teenage Liberation and/or Two Handed Handshake. And there's some Sketchy Metal with a heavy touch of Franz to it.
What I fell mostly for, was the lyrics. It's almost a summary of every trope Craig has visited. And I would guess skepticalfirst, and his extreme Here Goes-thread, is having a ball right now.

I tried to do a transcription of the lyrics. Pretty unsure about lots of things here, and there's a few parts I can't hear properly. Maybe someone with a better ear for english (and also better earbuds than the pair I'm using right now) could make some corrections:
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
Yeah, when the band played Sally Cinnamon It felt like 1991 again I didn't get into them to early in But I still got into them Right now that seems like it's the most important thing
And that's the thing about Gideon He just knows just a little bit about so many things He knows too much about certain things He knows some guys who know some Latin Kings Right now that seems like it's pretty much the only thing
Baby ___ and broken wings, and we sing Yeah, we sing you these songs, but the scene's still splintered Yeah, we're strechted thin, and were stressed at the scene ,and we dream Yeah, we dream like screams, and it's still out of focus Sure we know it's just showbiz And it still seems to surprise us When they hop us by the mouth, and they pull us out, and then they try to fry us
And that's the thing about Charlemagne He got all washed up in the amber waves of grain Roughed up on the bars and the bluff And tangled up in the double dutch You know he drank too much He never really ate enough
And it was so so sad when Charlie and his sick buddies Looked like hell and smoked like chemicals Maxing out on medicine and feeling all invincible ICU in Regions Hospital It felt so cool with Holly at the bus stop And we could feel it coming through our arteries And we're running low on energy, and nodding of in reverie Faded blues ____ Tennessee And the Mississippi river always melts it all together
Yeah, we sing you these songs, but the scene's still splintered Yeah, we're strechted thin, and were stressed at the scene ,and we dream Yeah, we dream like screams, and it's still out of focus Sure we know it's just showbiz And it still seems to surprise us When they hop us by the mouth, and they pull us out, and then they try to fry us
We did a pretty good job of flying our selves at things (??) And she blows blasts of static And the music from the _____ Stumbled in to a ____, _____ the bookshelf over Yeah, we're ____ Into litterature _____ smoker, hang your head _____ at your debt (?) A big black bible hit your head And that's how we got born again

Oh yeah --- got the reissues on Monday and have been listening to and working through it since. I put some notes up at the end of the Here Goes thread, figured it belonged there. Kind of went overboard, but what else is new. It's great to get some new music.
I haven't owned a turntable in forever so I ordered the CDs, which came with an extra page of liner notes for 212-Margarita and The Most Important Thing. Here's a transcription of the lyrics:
When the band played Sally Cinnamon. It felt like 1991 again. I didn't get into them too early in But I still got into them. Right now that seems like it's the most important thing.
That's the thing about Gideon. He knows just a little bit about so many things. Knows too much about certain things. Knows some guys who know some Latin Kings. Right now that seems like it's pretty much the only thing. We're baby birds with broken wings and we sing.
We sing unity songs but the scene's still splintered. We're stretched thin and we're stressed at the seams and we dream. We dream like screens but it's still out of focus. So we know it's just show biz, but it still seems to surprise us. When they hook us by the mouth and pull us up and then they try to fry us.
That's the thing about Charlemagne. He got all washed up in the amber waves of grain. Rubbed up on the bars on the bluff. Got tangled up in the double dutch. You know he drank too much. He never really ate enough.
It was so so sad with Charlie in his sick bed He looked like hell and smelled like chemicals Maxing out on medicine and feeling all invincible ICU at Regions Hospital. (Craig scribbled "Regents?" in the margin; Minnesotan->English is tricky)
It felt so cool with Holly at the bus stop. With that feeling coming through our arteries. Running low on energy and nodding off in revelry. Faded blues of Memphis Tennessee. Mississippi River always holds it all together.
We sing unity songs but the scene's still splintered. We're stretched thin and we're stressed at the seams and we dream. We dream like screens but it's still out of focus. Sure we know it's just show biz Still seems to surprise us When they hook us by the mouth and pull us up and then they try to fry us.
We've done a pretty good job of frying ourselves I think. Then she blows blasts of static into music from the big pink. Stumbled into the foyer and pulled the bookshelf over. And we were drowning in the literature. Bram Stoker bit your neck (Craig sings "hit your head" but he typed "bit your neck"; then he scribbles "Bit yr neck!" again, maybe to remind himself) Ginsberg hit your dick. A big black Bible hit your head. And that's how we got born again.
Your "summary of every Hold Steady trope" is about right. Definitely not their greatest song, but I like the first verse a lot.

agreed that it's not the greatest, but it's still super exciting to hear something new from that era. and that version of 212 margarita caught me off guard! i thought it'd be one of the versions that's already floating around.
