Hey guys, what's up? I was wondering if someone could help me with the religious references in Sketchy Metal. I'm having a hard time pinning them down and making anything out of them. Can you tell me what do you understand by them? For reference, here they are:
We didn't see the Holy Ghost But the father and the son, they seemed like regular folks Jesus rolled his eyes when his dad made Jesus jokes And he forgave me for my sins and he said Let the famine end and let the 2-for-1s begin And bless the beasts and the children and the water and the waiters It's always so creative when you're hanging out with our Creator And his son, our savior You get your picture in the paper if he lets you in his trailer It's always so amazing when you're finally coming down with entertainers
Thanks!

I've always read it as a tounge-in-cheek way to cast the holy trinity as a part of a scene. To frame Jesus and God as entertainers (and to be fair, they've entertained quite a few during the past milleniums) who you'd love to party with, just as much as you want to hang out with other people (like bands, more conventional entertainers) who populate the scene. The same people referenced in another verse in the same song. When you finally meet them, they're not that elevated or holy, they seem like regular folks. God makes Jesus jokes, and Jesus seems to joke about ending famine and start drinking.
I don't think there's a deeper or hidden meaning. I just see it as a paraphrasing of the people-of-the-scene-meets-the-entertainers, or something like that.

If Jesus is a nickname for Charlemagne, then this works as a meeting with Charlemagne and Gideon.

I don't have a good answer to your question but I just wanted to get it on the record that "Jesus rolled his eyes as his dad made Jesus jokes" has always been one of my favourite THS lines.

Don't overthink it man. It's just about Jesus and God being among us, being relateable, and being in unexpected places, with unexpected crowds. one of the great themes of THS IMO
