Easily some of the best writing that's ever been done on this band. So, so good.

Easily some of the best writing that's ever been done on this band. So, so good. Agreed. I can't remember a text getting so close to describe my own feelings about Hold Steady. And it's nice that Separation Sunday still gets some praise. Most people (like myself) discovered them on Boys And Girls or Stay Positive, and those records are regarded as the definitive version of the band. After nearly a decade of Hold Steady in my life, I can easily say that to me, Separation Sunday is the definitive document of the band.

Absolutely. And it really nails the feeling of discovering them after SS, before they really blew up to another level. I had the exact same thoughts as the author when I first got into the album, and there was that total sense of mystery about them. I had such a completely different mental image of the band based just on their sound.
