I was recently asked about my dream setlist. Here it is. Make yours. 22 songs, structure it how you want, down to the encore length. No song is off limits. Yes, I'm ripping off Matt's idea. No shame.

I don't think mine is any different from my realistic dream setlist, which is a testament to how cool this band is.

Randomly stumbled across this seven year old thread, and I'm resurrecting it in the wake of muzzleofbees finishing his top 100 countdown. This particular story got me thinking: So I obviously spent a lot of time wondering what I would've said in that scenario. I agree with Muzzle's strategy of asking for a deep cut, and I honestly would want it to be something off of AKM. Maybe Hostile, Mass.? There's also Sweet Payne, which isn't really a deep cut, but it's far from a guarantee at live shows (from my understanding) and I'd definitely want to hear it. I sort of settled on Curves and Nerves, which seems to be a very rare occurrence live and I think it's a hidden THS gem, but picking just one is tough. It'd be a lot more fun to design a whole set list, so here we are. I ended up putting a lot of thought into this, and I made a few adjustments to the original parameters based on the structure of the 2020/2021 live stream shows. The band has been doing 21 songs then a 5 song encore pretty consistently, and they hit at least one song from each album in all of those shows. So I made those my guidelines. Here's the ideology I operated under: I get to pick 26 songs for The Hold Steady to play, so I want to make it a 26 song combination that no one in the audience will ever hear again. I tried to steer clear of Hoodrat, Stations, Resurrection, etc. because they'll be played at every show in which I don't design the set list. I completely abandoned that logic when I put Constructive into HSL, though, so I guess my morals aren't that strong. Keep in mind, this is far from my top 26; it's 26 songs, all of which I still love, that would make for a (hopefully) memorable show. Without further ado, here's my set list: 1. Eureka 2. Family Farm 3. Girls Like Status 4. Stevie Nix 5. Hurricane J 6. Entitlement Crew 7. Hostile, Mass. 8. Party Pit 9. Sweet Payne 10. Unpleasant Breakfast 11. Constructive Summer 12. Hot Soft Light 13. Multitude of Casualties 14. Esther 15. Massive Nights 16. Cattle and the Creeping Things 17. Banging Camp 18. Chillout Tent 19. Curves and Nerves 20. Spinners 21. A Slight Discomfort 22. Modesto Is Not That Sweet 23. Lanyards 24. Magazines 25. Slapped Actress 26. Killer Parties Would love to hear anyone else's lists or thoughts on mine!

Here's the ideology I operated under: I get to pick 26 songs for The Hold Steady to play, so I want to make it a 26 song combination that no one in the audience will ever hear again. This is both an easier and in many ways more interesting task. It makes it easier not have to worry about putting the songs you love, but who you'd actually heard a bunch of time, in there. And it's interesting to see what deep cuts you would chose if you could. It's also closer to reality now than what it was seven years ago. During these four nights spells they do in New York (and next year, once again in Toronto), a dedicated deep cuts show actually could be feasible. So this is my dream setlist for an imagined night #3 out of 4, and bearing in mind that I've seen the band to regular setlist 25 times already, and probably also will in the future: 01. Sweet Part Of The City 02. Adderall 03. Barfruit Blues 04. Banging Camp 05. Curves And Nerves 06. Charlemagne In Sweatpants 07. Our Whole Lives 08. Spices 09. Yeah Sapphire 10. Hostile, Mass 11. The Most Important Thing 12. Unpleasant Breakfast 13. Heavy Covenant 14. Hot Fries 15. 40 Bucks 16. Spinners 17. The Ambassador 18. Epaulets 19. Milkcrate Mosh 20. Southtown Girls 21. How A Resurrection Really Feels -- 22. Hornets 23. Sweet Payne 24. Most People Are DJs 25. Slapped Actress There's still - even without adding Hoodrat, Stations, Constructive Summer and a few other pretty nailed on songs - plenty of rarely played numbers I have to leave out. But I think this would be a thrill.

SPotC is such a good opener, and Curves and Nerves, 40 Bucks, and Milkcrate Mosh all in the same set would be sublime.

I’ve based mine on “songs I’ve not heard live” (not counting the livestreams). I’d be very happy with this as a third night of the Weekender
1. The Feelers 2. Epaulets 3. Two-handed Handshake 4. The Smidge 5. The Only Thing 6. Lanyards 7. For Boston 8. Spices 9. Riptown 10. Joke about Jamaica 11. Family Farm 12. 212-Margarrita 13. Arms and Hearts 14. Milkcrate Mosh 15. Chillout Tent (with Julien Baker, who will be supporting) 16. Separate Vacations 17. Our Whole Lives 18. A Slight Discomfort …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 19. Heavy Covenant 20. Unpleasant Breakfast 21. Records and Tapes 22. Parade Days

robs — really like that. A lot of ODP, which is definitely a good thing. As much as I love Killer Parties as a closer, ending on Parade Days would be so perfect and unexpected. It would actually be great if they did stuff like that every now and then

It would actually be great if they did stuff like that every now and then I still dream of a show closing with a dragged-out version of T-Shirt Tux. That final part should go on for way longer than it does, and with some rehearsing, it could have been a magnificent way to close the main set.
