Is he the "Australian Bill Bailey". if you're getting paid by the word and want something snappy to say about him without having to think too hard or actually pay him much attention then yes, he is. he's pretty different, though...bill bailey's act is largely based around parodying genres, and tim minchin tends to concentrate more on wordplay within his own style of songwriting. I think in that situation I'd call him "The Bill Bailey from Down Under", and get paid twice as much.

i went to see U2 a few years ago with a now ex-girlfriend. we drove up from OC to Oakland...which is a good 7 hours. We got there and drank in the parking lot, by the time we actually got into the show i was so wiped out from driving and then pounding beer that i fell asleep after about the third song, and missed the rest of the show...including the encore. I really dont like U2 anyway so it wasnt that big of deal for me...but man was my ex-girlfriend pissed.

No thoughts on U2 really... They've done some great tunes, they've done some crap. Moving on to something more important... BILL BAILEY IS AMAZING. That clip, whilst funny, doesn't do him justice. You really need to watch an entire show to get into the Bill Bailey zone. I'm not sure how well he translates transatlantically, however. I love his work - he obviously puts his set together very carefully, but he manages to create an air of seamlessly drifting from one idea to another. He has this congenial air that makes it feel like you could just hang out with him. And he is obviously very intelligent and a gifted musician. He can pastiche anything, and he has an incredibly inventive mind. I <3 him!

rachel, you know what you're talking about. that entire show had me in stiches. the video was literally because he takes the piss out of the edge, but he is intelligent, off-beat and hilarious. i dunno what our international friends make of him... he can sometimes be a bit surreal even for the english!
do i feel a comedy thread coming on?

except The Edge mostly unceremoniously nicked his trademark sound from Public Image Ltd. and siouxie and the banshees/television/cpt beefheart/ yeah, that's it...the Edge ripped off one of his contemporaries.what a load of bullshit.even if that were true, last time i checked,Keith Levene doesn't do anything but sit in his house in Cornwall hoping his booze doesn't run out before the next royalty check(from records he made almost 30 years ago) comes in the mail. to be sure,i do recall Edge acknowledging him quite often as an inspiration.but to suggest that you can sum up Edge's whole career as milking Keith Levene's sound on the first couple of PIL albums is ludicrous. jeez...throw a rock in Eire and you'll hit a virulent U2 hater. p.s.Siouxsie hasn't done anything worth a damn since right around the time U2 got big,Television's Marquee Moon is the most overrated album of all time and Captain Beefheart doesn't play guitar.

I have listened to Achtung Baby in excess of 1,700 times. The Joshua Tree comes in closer to 1,500. I figured this deserved mentioning.
That is all.

I rate U2's 'Joshua Tree' as one of the best albums I've heard. One of the first two tapes I bought was U2's 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill me', from the Batman Forever soundtrack. Sweet tune. The other tape was the Outhere Brothers 90's dance classic, 'Boom Boom Boom'. Those where the days

They're the photo on my dartboard. doesn't something have to be rated first to be overrated? they're a flash in the pan, and in two years time will be looked at with the same gnawing embarrassment as the darkness or hard-fi or the klaxons.

Now that's just ludicrous. to clarify:i actually think that Marquee Moon is a good album.however, the way hipsters and critics talk about it is a bit much.there are other good records that came out of that time and place that no one talks about now.guess all you have to do is is play a few shows, make one record and tell people you're into shitheads like Verlaine and you're on your way to immortality. Television=punk rock's answer to Gram Parsons

Yeah, true. Except that... I still like The Darkness, and Hard Fi... and I kinda like the Klaxons too. However, I have noticed, that everytime a thread on this section of the board turns into a discussion of a band YOU always put them down and I always stick up for them. I think that means you're an elitist and I'm a musical whore.

Since when were the Darkness rated? And Glasvegas are depressing unoriginal shite. the darkness were certainly rated at least as highly as glasvegas in their time. they were huge, albeit briefly. my point was that comparing the "overratedness" of these flash in the pan bands to something like marquee moon is kind of missing the point. marquee moon is still revered and commonly cited as an influence after more than 30 years, and while it's difficult to say which current records will get that treatment i think it's pretty safe to say that glasvegas and the darkness and hard-fi and their ilk will be lucky to feature as a footnote. if they're to be compared to bands from the seventies you're better off looking at the bay city rollers.

I thought everyone thought Darkness were a joke band. Did some people actually take them seriously?
"One way ticket to hell and back" - surely that should be a return ticket to hell and back?

Glasvegas(and MGMT) are probably the reasons why I canceled my subscription to NME.
Now Empire is my magazine of choice. But the newist issue is a tad bare, especially when compared to January's amazing issue.
