Is that the same Pitchfork who gave the greatest live album of all time (A Positive Rage - who needs Live in Leeds?!) 6.0? Fuck them. And Mojo (who I subscribe to incidentally). 2 stars? Seriously?! Live At Budokan. End of discussion. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...anyone?

I'm feeling a distinct lack of love for A Positive Rage on here but I still stick by it as a nice distillation of The Hold Steady live experience. Is there a particular bootleg you guys would recommend? If I get another nomination for best live album I'd like to give a shout out for John Lennon Live Peace in Toronto 1969. Sure Lennon and Clapton seem particularly strung out but by the time Yoko crawls out of her bag for the startling rendition of Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand in the Snow) it's a done deal for me.

Might not be "the Greatest", but is definitely a top contender. It's got a little bit of everything that defines Springsteen's live shows.

Probably not the greatest(s) of all time, but the live ones I think I listen to the most are:
Kicking Television by Wilco The Last Waltz by The Band Hammersmith Oden, London '75 by Springsteen David Live (1974) by Bowie Martin & Me by J. Mascis The Roots Come Alive by The Roots Live in Chicago by Ween Europe '72 by The Grateful Dead Live 1966: The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert by Bob Dylan

I'll take the Bruce and E Street Live at Winterland 12/15/78 bootleg over most live albums any day.

Springsteen - Live 75-85 Nirvana - Unplugged Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous (though may not be as live as it seems!) The Band - The Last Waltz Pink Floyd - Pulse / Delicate Sound of Thunder Led Zeppelin - Song Remains the Same (though more for the historical context of a Zep gig than the quality) Simon & Garfunkel - Concert in Central Park AC/DC - If you want blood you've got it Dire Straits - Alchemy

I'll take the Bruce and E Street Live at Winterland 12/15/78 bootleg over most live albums any day. My son just bought a pristine copy of Live at the Roxy from 78 for 10 bucks. Its the legendary "Bootleggers, roll your tapes" show.

I'll take the Bruce and E Street Live at Winterland 12/15/78 bootleg over most live albums any day. Great choice. I always go back to the 1978 Capitol Theater show (Piece De Resistance), but this one might be the stronger overall show. Throw my hat in the ring for The Last Waltz. Ummm, obviously, I guess.

Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous
or
Johnny Cash - Live from San Quentin
or
Ramones - it's Alive
or
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
or
James Brown - Live At The Apollo
or
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
or
AC/DC - If You Want Blood (You Got It)
Or I guess what I am trying to say is there is an almost endless list of better live albums than A Positive Rage.
For me the gold on that relate is the five track EP of
Ask Her For Some Aderrall Cheyenne Sunrise Two Handed Handshake Spectres 40 Bucks
The live stuff isn't the best live recording the band have put out.

Damn! I forgot about Live After Death by Iron Maiden. That was the first album I ever bought with my own money. How could I have been so foolish? Time to dig it out...

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense This is my personal favourite. Once In A Lifetime is absolutely perfect.

Ok people I've had enough of your suggestions now. Live at Budokan? Fine. I guess you mean Cheap Trick but as you didn't specify I'll pretend you meant Dream Theater instead. A Positive Rage is an album I took away with me after moving away. My leaving do was a double header of Manic Street Preachers and The Cribs in the O2 arena preceded by THS and Bombay Bicycle Club in Camden Koko. It was awesome! During Your Little Hoodrat Friend my glasses flew off my face and I smiled. It was that kind of night. Bonhomie and buddies. If you prefer Bob Marley's live album good for you. I don't. Bob Marley reminds me of singing Three Little Birds in Wembley Stadium watching my team lose on penalties to Liverpool and trust me, every little ting was not al-fuckin'-right!

I'd also like to point out I'm aware Three Little Birds isn't on Live! Just in case like.
