That stereogum review is pretty darn good. Thanks for posting.

I think the Line of Best Fit reviewer kinda missed the point here:
"The trouble with a middle-aged act trying to recapture a little of the Glory Days also rears its head on “The Only Thing” as Finn laments that ‘this town was so much fun when there weren’t so much police.” To misquote Alan Partridge, it’s not really an appropriate sentiment for a man in his mid-forties."
To me, the narrator in that song isn't really being nostalgic about the good old days. And with that line in particular, I don't think it's meant to be taken literally at all... I think the "police" and "speed" references are just metaphors for simpler, less anxious times.

The production is great, can't wait to listen to a proper rip.
As for the album, it's refreshing, focused, and unmistakably THS. Better than the first two albums? No, not close, but nothing will be. It's a more than solid album, though, and one that I felt they needed to make after HIW.

That stereogum review is pretty darn good. Thanks for posting. It really is! Those premature evaluations gets better and better. And I think they strike a nice balance between the contextualization/explaining, and the more personal feelings towards the album. The Teeth Dreams text was no exception.

do any editors work at stereogum? the sentiment in the article was nice and all, but jesus christ it was full of typos. at one point they called the record With Teeth (which is also an excellent album, but still)

Interesting...I know I'm biased but I'm surprised a little. I want want this album to get the acclaim that I think it deserves, but if this album becomes one that the fans love and the critics don't, I'm okay with that.

Gets a D from COS. Disappointed that D does not stand for "Dude, it's awesome". consequenceofsound.net/2014/03/album-review-the-hold-steady-teeth-dreams/Not sure if it's impolite to critique someone's personal take on an album, but the main tenet of the review that THS no longer connects doesn't sit well with me. Pretty much every song apart from The Only Thing and Wait Awhile resonates big time with me at least.

"Constantine", "Stacked Actors" among others. An opinion is one thing, lazy writing is another. Getting the facts straight and being informed if you're going to do a takedown is important. This writer didn't bother. Just poor..

Norwegian tabloid Dagbladet review the album today, and give a 5/6.

THS really isn't a band that's going to garner 5-star reviews anymore, with some exceptions. They do one thing: play thoughtful rock music. And they do it really fucking well. But doing one thing really fucking well for ten years isn't something that excites critics these days. And, you know what? Screw the current state of music criticism. Most of these guys read like they're angling for a job at Pitchfork, which is more in love with itself than it is with music. Also this... www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JPOoFkrh94&noredirect=1

That COS review is classic "I wanted this band to make X album, but they made Y album, so I hate it." That's a guy's take on an album, not a critic's review of a piece of music. Ughhhhh.

The only reviews that are accurate and fair on a consistent basis are from allmusic.com.
