I think Mr Duritz is one of the best lyricists to put pen to paper in the last 50 years. Jim Carrol also had it going on.

I think people do not like Duritz cause he comes off like a shithead. This stoner dude from Mr. Hand's class who had all the eggs in one basket and somehow lost the fucking basket. But I cannot discount his contribution to rock and roll. Guy is a brilliant writer and performer. I saw him for the first time as the warm up band for Little Village, which was a tight little band with the likes of Jim Keltner, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe. Counting Crows blew them off the stage. Not an easy task. But at some point Duritz became this hippie shaman who dated models and people got a little jealous. So now he's looked upon as a dick, an easy target. But the fucker can put some words together. Raining in Baltimore, Hard Candy, A Long December, Rain King, Mr. Jones, A Murder of One......

Accidentally in Love, Big Yellow Taxi, Thorn in My Pride. (please note that this thread is not in the music category) I am pretty sure he only wrote Accidentally in Love...and yeah I do dislike the cover of Big Yellow Taxi.

I had no idea he was so hated. I bought records by CC but don't think I ever read and interview or article about them. I also have records by Black Mountain, The Temperance Movement, Joe Pug and Joy Zipper that I love but know nothing about those bands either

Bah. Counting Crows have put out some amazing albums. Saturday Nights fucking rocks. Try and deny that blazing guitar work by Vickrey. Dare ya. Lyrics wise, 90% of their catalog is primo in my far from humble opinion.

if one is going to get all fanboy over a singer, one might want to pick the right forum. Hold up. So we're not allowed to talk about anyone else on here? I believe the question was favourite lyricists, and what, 'cause a couple of folk happened to like the same person.. That's a problem? I always figure this place is like we're all sitting in a bar. We're having conversations and sometimes a couple of us will continue a conversation based on one point that was made. Just.. Don't listen! x

I also have records by Black Mountain, The Temperance Movement, Joe Pug and Joy Zipper that I love but know nothing about those bands either Nah, this isn't about hate (except maybe for jorelle it is). It's just an unsubtle reminder that if one is going to get all fanboy over a singer, one might want to pick the right forum. Or be completely and defensibly right. Now as I understand it, the only person who is always completely and indefensibly right is my wife. It's all a matter of taste, which is surely the point of the thread? It's "favourite" lyricists, not "best"!? Anyway, while we're fangirl / boy ing: Craig Finn Bruce Springsteen Lennon & McCartney (all obviously) Roger Waters Neil Young Van Morrison Neil Finn Chris Difford Nicky Wire Jimmy Barnes / Ian Moss / Don Walker / Steve Prestwich / Phil Small (of Cold Chisel - one for the Aussie U Scene!) Keaton Henson I could go on....and on

Bah. Jackson Browne has put out some amazing albums. Late for the Sky fucking rocks. Try and deny that blazing guitar work by Lindley. Dare ya. Lyrics wise, 90% of his catalog is primo in my far from humble opinion. You win. I have been surprised on more than one occasion when upon hearing a really cool song and inquiring as to it's origin that the answer has been Jackson Browne. One of the most underrated songwriters for sure. Oh, nevermind.I was thinking of Joe Jackson. Oops.

''If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts'' When i got the CD, I had to replay that line a few times to absorb it. Once I 'got' it, it opened a door to my thoughts that you can never close. please let me know if you enjoyed that link.
