OK, I know for a fact the band will be in Austin. But, still no showcase announcements yet? With no Austin date on the tour (got my tix for Dallas!), I'm hoping to catch many shows. Anyone know anything yet?

Craig tweeted this last week and I took it to mean the band wasn't going to be playing SXSW but things could have certainly changed since then:

I read that as "tongue-in-cheek."
The entire band will definitely be here (can't say how I know that, sorry), and the original press releases about Washington Square mentioned a SXSW showcase. Hope that still happens.

I see it now, they have two things listed on the SXSW schedule. A showcase (no time or date yet) and a performance at the Radio Day Stage at the Convention center. Hope for more!

One more: www.ifc.com/sxsw/scheduleHopefully they publish their whole schedule. Still no word on the showcase, but I'm thinking it's Stubbs since that venue hasn't released a schedule yet.

Glad to see that some of the Scenesters will catch THS at SXSW.
I've never been to this event, so for those who have, feel free to tell me I'm missing the point. But it feels to me like SXSW has gotten way too big over the last 5-6 years. It seems nearly impossible for a band to break through the huge mass of STUFF going on throughout the entire week. Kinda like turning everything into white noise.
Having said that, I guess it's still a good way for bands to get exposure to radio, producers, and people inside the industry.

Yes, that's true. But, if you use the week to catch your favorite band(s) and a few new ones, it's quite manageable. I have a blast. Of course, I just moved to Austin from LA, so it might feel different now that I live here.

i was going to be playing a few SXSW shows, but our tour isn't happening anymore. i was iffy on the whole thing anyway, seems like a big music industry party and full of bands trying to MAKE IT. a lot of it rubs me the wrong way. the networking aspect of music is by far my least favorite part of it (well, 2nd least favorite. publicity photos are the worst thing ever). i'm sure we would've had fun, though.

will be @ Mohawk. Arriving by 4 hopefully and just sitting outside hyperventilating. will report but not sure what that means exactly. fist show. been listening almost five years.
excited
to anyone else coming: look for 6', 120 lb. short dark-brown hair with much grey, 18 y/o, cardigan-draped, prolly rapping to himself nervously with water cup
call me william please cuz iterate will sound too much like idiot and i'll think ur mad and walk away all nervous-like thinking i fucked something up
<3 hope to meet someone cool
edit: show was v good. no "so much joy" speech tho. short set. realized i'm way too far removed from the rock-concert-goer subculture to offer any useful reports (can't sort out what's part of THIS ths show, what's part of A ths show, what's part of a ROCK show, what's part of a NON-rap show, what's part of a SXSW show, what's part of a show populated mostly by (much) older people, etc).
will say i experienced more rudeness/generally anxiety-inducing behavior from the crowd than i have at rap or folk shows, but can't really try to explain why at all, for above-mentioned reasons

Kinda like turning everything into white noise. Having said that, I guess it's still a good way for bands to get exposure to radio, producers, and people inside the industry. there are fans who have loyalty to particular showcases/venues/mini-fests/unofficial shows/etc because their tastes align with those of the regular booker for that show. so it's like 'i guess i'll just go chill in this spot and hear all the stuff picked by this guy who did good these past few years.' also, i'm getting to play a show where about a dozen of the people part of the greater, informal, national creative community i wanna be a part of, so my set is a chance to put myself on the radar of my heroes/favorite indie labels. sxsw is very much not what it's marketed as being for fans/musicians, but it is still has some pluses. hope this made sense. (sidenote: this is all observational, since this is my first year in austin for it, so I'm relying mostly on my promoter/booker/more-experienced-musician friends)

Was at both shows today. Here are the set lists (I apologize for not spelling out the songs totally). Crowd at Mohawk was good, people into it up front. Short 40 minute set.

Second party was an invite only thing at a local advertising agency's party. Started raining just as they went on, so a lot of people took cover, but there were enough diehards up front to make it fun.

A fun start to the fest. I'm hoping to hit every show.

A quick scene report from the two shows yesterday (3/12). Happy to end my night with the band instead of the tragedy to the east. So senseless and stupid. First up, they played at 6:40pm to a fairly big, energized crowd at the IFC Park. A large carnival-like park with a slide, food and drink and a big stage. Lots of smiles and talking from Craig. THS IFC Frighten You can Stations Memphis Status Spinners Chips Hoodrat Southtown On With the Business Next up, the official showcase at Cedar Street at 1am. Definitely felt like a typical Hold Steady show with lots of singing along, beer spilling and pushing and pulling up front. Another great set. THS Cedar St. Constructive Hot Soft Frightened Multitude Spinners Weekenders Rock Problems Magazines Chips Stations Sequestered On With The Business Slapped Actress Up early for the radio broadcast at 10am today. You should be able to listen live here: www.kgsr.com/sxsw/Great to see so many shows. Hoping the guys throw a couple of AKM or SS nuggets into the set for the remainder, but I'm not complaining. These sets make total sense for the SXSW throngs.
