this thread is precious and fascinating. unfortunately, not the thread for "where can i get a cello pickup that won't fucking feed back so i can stop stuffing a bandana in the F-holes like an idiot?" i'll show myself out. (f-holes.) I'm not sure where he disappeared to, and heck, he is from outside of Cleveland after all, but still, no sense in talking about Bandana and F holes like that. He appeared in the official poster for Boys And Girls in America, that should count for something. NCD44 good seeing you last week Heidi

Oh, and volume and directional proximity are your friends. Less is more, and orient yourself sideways to the speakers.

Long time lurker (pre migration to the new board), first time user/poster. Felt I had to join not just this awesome board, but also thread. Big guitar/gear nerd, great to get some info from the man himself. Guitar nerd Q: Does anybody know what model the Cream/Beige Fender cab is that Tad used together with the white Bob amp head at some of the shows last year? Leave it to Heidi to derail a perfectly good thread for boys... 2x12 Fender cab: I bought it empty and put two 25w Celestions in it - the Rola/Alnico 'bell' ones. Mr. Jones - you are correct. Stage volume is crucial. And there are tons of factors in that equation. Some of the hardest things to deal with: 1. Most amplifiers (that are worth playing - vintage or boutique or otherwise) sound the best when they're turned up and you're hitting the gain stage hard AND (in my opinion) the output stage. Simply put - most amps sound the best when you're playing them as loud as they'll get. And it's difficult to find low wattage amplifiers that are made well, sound good and are affordable. Smaller amplifiers, particularly vintage amps, were not really intended to be taken on tour. 'Touring', as we know it now, really didn't exist when people were designing and manufacturing something like the Deluxe. I'm not even talking about being knocked around every evening - load-in, load-out, bouncing around the back of a van or a trailer from city to city, etc... I mean being plugged in and turned up for a couple hours every evening. And by the time guitar players were able to really collaborate with amp makers to design and manufacture an amplifier with the specific purpose of touring, those guitar players were playing stadiums and arenas. 2. When most of us started doing this, we went out and got the amp we always wanted (and were pretty convinced we needed). For the lot of us - that was a 4x12 cabinet and a 50w or 100w head. Because why dick around with anything else? It's as if my 17 year old brain said, 'Hey, man - this is only going to be too much amp for the next 6 or 7 months. Now that everyone in this time zone can hear how brilliant my shit is, I'll be rocking it right-sized at a local civic arena near you in no time!' Nope. Not quite. I'm gonna be hauling this fucking boat anchor up and down 3 flights of stairs in every hellhole from Sioux City to Sacramento for the next decade. And that's if I'm lucky. My Uzi Weighs A Ton. Meanwhile, you think I give a flying fuck about how it sounds pointed right at your face and/or whether or not it's even coming through the PA to a room occupied by 8 dudes, 1 pissed girlfriend and the on-staff, half-drunk FOH guy/local pot dealer? Not even remotely. My only concern is that it's loud enough for God to hear and louder than the rhythm section. Eventually (and thankfully) we get wise. Or we just get tired of being told to turn down. Which some nights we do. Some nights we don't. Either way, we don't do either without a lot of persuasive gibberish about how British tube amps work and how rock was meant to sound. Night after night protesting and playing to nobody that gives a shit. But we come around, eventually. Hopefully before everyone has fled for their lives.

Hell, I used to get begged to turn down with a Music Man RD-112 Fifty (1x12 Tube Power Amp, Solid State Pre, 50 watts, EV Speaker) on 3 at shows. Then again, I used to put a clean boost pedal on to make up for that volume that they made me turn down...

Fun times with stage volume indeed. I am primarily a bass player and have dragged a V4 and 810 all over the place until recently I grabbed a 77' Hiwatt DR-201 on a steal of a deal. I've only had it for a year or so and have already waged a few wars with sound guys and had it absolutely chew through modern power tubes... sounds so nice but so damn loud - I might have to start taking the V4 out again.

Hello fellow nerds. Bob Amp here .
So Tads black 2x12 is essentially an 18 watt topology but the first 2 triodes are in parallel very much like a Matchless preamp. Output tubes are RCA 7189s. Preamp tubes are Hammond labeled Mullards along with a cv4004 in V1.
Steve's white Bob head is essentially the same amp but with a switchable output section. Brimar 12ax7s on the front end. Not sure why people think it's sounds much thinner, it actually has a lot more low end on stage than Tads rig. Maybe because tads Greenbacks bark a lot more in the mids than the Alnico Fender cab? Tads rig is definitely more robust in the midrange.
Anyway , I'm on the board now. Hit me up with any questions or comments.

My guess is its the mini humbuckers in the firebird he used for most of the show. I once had an old 70's LP goldtop with minihums and I could never get used to the thin sound. For the record I thought the amps sounded great. Nice job.

I like that from the recordings of the Harrisburg gig, and from other live vids of THS over the last few years, there is a distinct difference between the tones/styles of Tad and Steve that translates live. Makes for a really exciting listen.
